Book Description
A Wartime Journey Revisited is the extraordinary blend of two accounts of the same journey, a generation removed. From father to son (and wife), the parallel accounts follow the same path seventy two years apart, both equally moving. It will appeal to history buffs, readers who love road-stories and those that enjoy a really good tale (or two!) In 1943, a young Dutchman, Pieter Schagen, fled from the Nazis. Travelling in secret, he journeyed through Holland, Belgium, France and crossed the Pyrenees. After imprisonment in Spain, he finally reached Gibraltar, and from there travelled on to Britain, where he flew for the RAF. 54 years later, Piet wrote an account of his travels for the family, titling it An Odyssey through Occupied Europe in 1943. Both lively and quirky, and horrifying in parts, it gives a glimpse of the difficulties and dangers he encountered, and the kind people who helped him at their own risk. In 2015, Piet’s son Ian fulfilled a long-standing desire to follow in his father’s footsteps. Accompanied by his wife Sandie, he traced his father’s route, aiming to find the places mentioned in Piet’s book and (if possible) descendants of those kind people who helped him. Ian and Sandie succeeded beyond their wildest expectations. The journey led them across five countries, to large cities and sprawling, remote farms. The book speaks of their excitement when they found places exactly matching Piet’s description, their occasional frustrations, and some truly inspiring and amazing triumphs.

Book Description
** Now available for pre-order (title will be released on April 29th) **As a little girl of nine, Katherine Langrish fell deeply in love with The Chronicles of Narnia - she was even inspired to write a book of stories set in that world, complete with poster-paint picture of Aslan on the homemade dust jacket. Although she loved the Narnia books to bursting, others took their place as she grew up. For years they sat unopened on her shelves. She began to wonder why. Had they simply become too familiar? Had the charm faded? What might they mean to her as an adult? From Spare Oom to War Drobe is a love letter to that early passion, as well as a reappraisal of The Chronicles of Narnia in the light of maturity and changing tastes. It brilliantly evokes her initial sense of childish wonder, and in a close reading of the novels, including analysis of the context in which other critics have placed them, she gives us a superbly rich, enlightening, and immensely readable guide to the world of these evergreen stories.

Book Description
In 2013, Germany celebrated the bicentennial of the so-called Wars of Liberation (1813-15). These wars were the culmination of the Prussian struggle against Napoleon between 1806 and 1815, which occupied a key position in German national historiography and memory. Although these conflicts have been analyzed in thousands of books and articles, much of the focus has been on the military campaigns and alliances. Karen Hagemann argues that we cannot achieve a comprehensive understanding of these wars and their importance in collective memory without recognizing how the interaction of politics, culture, and gender influenced these historical events and continue to shape later recollections of them. She thus explores the highly contested discourses and symbolic practices by which individuals and groups interpreted these wars and made political claims, beginning with the period itself and ending with the centenary in 1913.

Book Description
This book explores the memorializing practices of American veterans of the Vietnam War at several of the most significant contemporary sites of memory in the United States and Vietnam. These sites include veterans' memoirs, museum exhibits, replicas of the National Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and tourism to Vietnam. Because war memorializing has, since the late 1960s, shifted focus from national soul searching to personal identity and recovery, I emphasize how contemporary narratives of the war, shaped more by memory than by history, often are detached from the specific history of the war and its political controversies. Drawing on trauma and cultural memory scholarship, as well as empirical data gathered during field research in the U.S. and Vietnam, the author examines how veterans' memorializing practices have become increasingly individualized, commodified, and conservative since the early 1980s.
