Book Description
After moving to a coastal town a gay couple is drawn to a group of outsiders living on the edge of the sea In Spell Heaven, a linked story collection, a lesbian couple moves to a coast town and unexpectedly finds a sense of belonging with a group of outsiders. Stories include the tale of an undocumented boy's drowning when a wave pulls him out to sea, an ex–FBI agent’s surveillance of a man who leaves chocolate bars at a tree in a weekly ritual, a mother on meth who teaches a lesson on mercy, and Kite Man, who flies kites from a fishing pole and sells drugs on the side. His motto: When the kites fly, you can buy. The narrator of these stories, raised in a working-class Croatian American fishing family and immigrant community, chooses an early career in labor-oriented jobs. Years later, she finds herself in an academic position in a white-collar world “where the clothes are clean but the politics are dirty.” She questions her own stereotypes about her neighbors and gradually begins to question her life path. Spell Heaven celebrates those who are looking for a human connection in an increasingly isolated world.

Book Description
Rhetorics for Community Action: Public Writing and Writing Publics, by Phyllis Mentzell Ryder, offers theory and pedagogy to introduce public writing as a complex political and creative action. To write public texts, we have to invent the public we wish to address. Such invention is a complex task, with many components to consider: exigency that brings people together; a sense of agency and capacity; a sense of how the world is and what it can become. All these components constantly compete against texts that put forward other public ideals_opposing ideas about who really has power and who really can create change. Teachers of public writing must adopt a generous response to those who venture into this arena. Some scholars believe that to prepare students for public life, university classes should partner with grassroots community organizations, rather than nonprofits that serve food or tutor students. They worry that a service-related focus will create more passive citizens who do not rally and resist or grab the attention of government leaders or corporations. With carefully contextualized study of an after-school arts program, an area soup kitchen, and parks organizations, among others, Ryder shows that many so-called 'service' organizations are not passive places at all, and she argues that the main challenge of public work is precisely that it has to take place among all of these compelling definitions of democracy. Ryder proposes teaching public writing by partnering with multiple community nonprofits. She develops a framework to help students analyze how their community partners inspire people to action, and offers a course design that support them as they convey those public ideals in community texts. But composing public texts is only part of the challenge. Traditional newspapers and magazines, through their business models and writing styles, reinforce a dominant role for citizens as thinking and reading, but not necessarily acting. This civic role is also professed in the university, where students are taught writing that extends inquiry. Phyllis Mentzell Ryder's Rhetorics for Community Action: Public Writing and Writing Publics turns to the rhetorical practices of nondominant American communities and counterpublics, whose resistance to 'good' public speech and 'proper' public behavior reveals alternate modes of composing and acting in democracy.

Book Description
Many would call being able to see the future a ‘gift,’ but twenty-six-year-old Hallie Lark calls it a useless, bewildering bother. She does in her own head, at least, because no one else knows about her ability. Not only is she an introvert and part of a cold family, but her glimpses of the future are as impossible to prove as they are to prevent. They're a bother, indeed, always leaving her feeling ineffectual—she doesn’t know why they plague her, and she wishes they wouldn’t. Until a truly staggering one sparks up out of nowhere, straight through the blue-gray dullness she’s been stuck in for so long. Somewhere in another state, Keaton Iorio is living his own version of life with his son, ordinary and happy. He’s certain he has all that he needs, from a wonderful family and a good best friend to a reliable job and solid health. Although finally meeting his match would be cool, being a single dad is fine by him; he’s blessed as it is, and he knows it. What he doesn’t know is that change was set in motion on the night of a certain young woman’s most beautiful and most confusing vision to date—a young woman who’s on the brink of discovering how great a gift her clairvoyance truly is. The collision of these two worlds will, with a brilliant crash, alter what Hallie and Keaton know of love, of themselves, of family, of possibility…and of a not-so-little thing called fate. **This story contains mature content.**
