Measuring Vocational Interests in Industrial Testing and the Problem of Response Bias
Author: Lyle H. Laughlin
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Interest (Psychology)
Languages : en
Pages : 138
Book Description
The measurement of vocational interest is relatively new, having been developed within the last thirty years. Information concerning the usefulness of such testing is still in a highly controversial state. Although many significant studies have been made in the construction of vocational interest inventories and in their application to vocational guidance and industrial personnel selection and guidance, many challenging questions remain. For the test technicians, there are problems of reliability and validity; for the consumer of vocational interest inventories there are problems of proper iterpretation and proper utilization of such inventories. Others, knowing vaguely of some of the weaknesses of occupational interest inventories, have completely rejected them. The introduction of this study provides some of the general implications of our concept of interest, the importance of its role in guidance and selection, and a description of the interest inventory and the problem at which this research is aimed. It is not the endeavor of this research to determine that occupational interest inventories should be accepted uncritically, nor is the objective to determine that vocational interest inventories should be rejected completely. It is the purpose of this research to avoid such reactions to a particular occupational interest inventory, namely, the "Kuder Preference Record" form BB, by pointing out some of its weaknesses and by attempting to contribute to the continuation of improvement of this inventory. This research is primarily concerned with the possibility of faking favorable interests on the Kuder Preference Record. It is also the purpose of this research to explore the possibility of developing an empirical method to detect such faking on the Kuder Preference Record. This research has not solved the problems of faking on the Kuder Preference Record, but has perhaps contributed to further and possibly more adequate, research. The reader is advised that conclusions in this study have been derived by inference from statistical analysis of data.

Advances in Vocational Psychology
Author: W. Bruce Walsh
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1135059845
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 222
Book Description
Advances in Vocational Psychology devoted to presenting and evaluating important advances in the field of interest measurement. Progress in three well known interest inventories -- the Strong Campbell Interest Inventory, the Kuder Occupational Interest Survey, and the Self Directed Search -- is closely examined. A focus on innovations in interest measurement directs attention to how more recent instruments provide technical and conceptual advances over older, more reliable ones. Both research and counseling perspectives combine to provide a well-balanced guide to the study of vocational psychology. How interest inventories can be used beneficially in the career counseling of minority and majority populations is also explored.
