Book Description
Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2010 in the subject Engineering - Geotechnology, , course: Civil Engineering, language: English, abstract: With growing infrastructure developments in hilly areas and due to economical constraints of using locally available rockfill materials for construction of embankments, practicing engineers must be acquainted with geotechnical response of non-conventional granular soils. These materials are most likely to disintegrate with time due to physical and chemical weathering. In general, the laboratory investigations on durability characteristics of such materials are only made through simple slaking tests. However, studies examining the effects of slaking-induced disintegration of soil grains on the geotechnical engineering analysis and design parameters are rather limited. This is essentially due to the reason that the grains of standard laboratory sands are mostly durable and hence, the stress-strain response is considered to be unaffected by the presence of water. In order to explore the possible effects of deterioration of soil grains on static and dynamic properties of granular soils, a series of consolidated drained torsional shear tests on various crushed soft rocks were performed under saturated and dry conditions and compared with a well reported Toyoura silica sand consisting of durable grains. Due to the sensitivity of crushed rockfill to deteriorate upon water-submergence, test under dry conditions represented the response of a soil with intact grains, whereas a similar test under saturated condition simulated the potential reduction in strength and stiffness of the soil with time. From the grain size distributions determined after each test, a degradation index was defined to quantify the degree of disintegration of grains. Strength and deformation properties determined from monotonic as well as cyclic shear tests were then compared with this index. Possible correlations of water-induced deterioration of soil grains with consolidation behaviour, peak shear strengths, friction angles, dynamic shear stiffness, and volume-change characteristics during shearing were explored. In addition, the effects of confining stress and shear strain level on particle breakage were also investigated. It was concluded that time-dependent characterization of rockfill materials by monitoring the degree of deterioration can be helpful to avoid catastrophic geotechnical failures. Nonetheless, this study is a caution to conventional soil mechanics in which decay of grains and loss of soil strength with time are often uncared.

Book Description
Archaeologist Martin Day had an affair with Ophelia Blue twenty years ago, and suddenly she is on her way to Naxos because she needs his help. He is excited to see her again, but also wary as his life now revolves around Helen. Ophelia, however, behaves perfectly - until she disappears after their first evening together without revealing why she had come. The police refuse to regard Ophelia as a missing person, nor is the difficult new Chief of Police, Inspector Kyriakos Tsountas, the kind of man to accept that her disappearance is connected to a strange local legend. The legend speaks of a lost ancient artefact known as the Kallos of Naxos. Only one man ever tried to find the Kallos, and he's dead. If Day is to find Ophelia he will need all his ingenuity and imagination, and quite possibly his courage. This is the fourth in the Naxos Mysteries series, in which many things come to a head for Martin Day in his search for the missing Ophelia.

Book Description
The biotechnology/biopharmaceutical sector has tremendously grown which led to the invention of engineered antibodies such as Antibody Drug Conjugates (ADCs), Bispecific T cell engager ( BITES), Dual Variable Domain ( DVD), Chimeric Antigen Receptor - Modified Tcells (CART) that are currently being used as therapeutic agents for immunology and oncology disease conditions. In addition to other pharmaceuticals and biopharmaceuticals, all these novel formats are fragile with respect to their stability/structure under processing conditions meaning marginal stability in the liquid state and often require lyophilization to enhance their stability and shelf-life. This book contains chapters/topics that will describe every aspect of the lyophilization process and product development and manufacturing starting from the overview of lyophilization process, equipment required, characterization of the material, design and development of the formulation and lyophilization process, various techniques for characterization of the product, scale-up/tech-transfer and validation. It also describes the application of CFD coupled with mathematical modeling in the lyophilization process and product development, scale-up, and manufacturing. Additionally, Principles and Practice of Lyophilization Process and Product Development contains an entire dedicated section on “Preservation of Biologicals” comprised of nine chapters written by experts and including case studies.

Book Description
This highly original work presents laboratory science in a deliberately skeptical way: as an anthropological approach to the culture of the scientist. Drawing on recent work in literary criticism, the authors study how the social world of the laboratory produces papers and other "texts,"' and how the scientific vision of reality becomes that set of statements considered, for the time being, too expensive to change. The book is based on field work done by Bruno Latour in Roger Guillemin's laboratory at the Salk Institute and provides an important link between the sociology of modern sciences and laboratory studies in the history of science.

Book Description
Love, Lies & Lab Coats brings a unusual group of people together at their place of employment, The South Hill Medical Center in Spokane, Washington. An egocentric Surgeon; a brilliant Medical Technologist, an insecure co-worker mending a broken heart, two parking lot attendants from divergent backgrounds, a high priced call girl, a talented chef who overindulges on junk food , a mountain woman hiding from her past, and a sick child, take us on a wonderful journey. They share stories that we will recognize as our own or help teach us something new. These dissimilar characters tackle some difficult yet realistic, everyday issues, through social commentary and soul searching. Some will help us take a step back and hopefully a look within. The road to love, forgiveness, redemption, self acceptance and awareness can be long, discouraging, arduous and extremely challenging. However, these rather colorful characters offer a little something for everyone. So many issues we would prefer to ignore or forget, grab us right in the middle of a love story that develops between an unlikely pair. As the story unravels, they weave their way through their trials and tribulations and will keep you wanting more as they find a place in your heart. I hope you enjoy the ride!
