Book Description
Excerpt from A Treatise on the Science and Practice of Midwifery, Vol. 1 of 2 Those who have studied the progress of Midwifery know that there is no department of medicinein which more has been done of late years, and none in which modern views of practice differ more widely from those prevalent only a short time ago. The Authors object has been to place in the hands of his readers an epitome of the science and practice of midwifery which embodies all recent advances. He is aware that on certain important points he has recommended practice which not long ago would have been considered heterodox in the extreme, and which, even now, will not meet with general approval. He has, however, the satisfaction of knowing that he has only done so after very deliberate reflection, and with the profound conviction that such changes are right, and that they will stand the test of experience. He has endeavoured to dwell especially on the practical part of the subject, so as to make the work a useful guide in this most anxious and responsible branch of the profession. It is admitted by all, that emergencies and difficulties arise more often in this than in any other branch of practice; and there is no part of the practitioners work which requires more thorough knowledge or greater experience. It is, moreover, a lamentable fact that -students generally leave their schools more ignorant of obstetrics than of any other subject. Book Description
Excerpt from A Treatise on the Science and Practice of Midwifery Four years have passed since the last American edition was issued, and this period has worked a revolution in the results attained in sev eral forms of Obstetric surgery: notably is this the case in the Form Caesarean Operation; the conservative Caesarean operation; and the exsective method Of treating extra-uterine pregnancy where the foetus is alive and of Viable development. The Porro operation has fallen in its rate of mortality since 1884 from 58 to less than 20 per cent. And the Conservative or Improved Caesarean, from 45 per cent. To a general average of 20 per cent., and for Continental Europe of 12. The exsective Operation named had had but one case prior to 1885, but has now had five without the death of a mother. These facts are not mentioned in the last English edition. Laparo-elytrotomy, which was attracting considerable attention four years ago, has almost ceased to exist, by reason of the diminished death-rate under the improved Caesarean section, which in Germany has been one case lost In eight. Laparo-elytrotomy has therefore not been performed since September 18, 1887. The Editor has brought up the work to date upon these subjects, and their statistical records to the close of the year 1888. All Of the American additions, except the article upon the forceps, have been either rewritten or remodelled, and many new and short notes have been added where required. The work has been sufficientlv Americanized, upon the points Where English and American Obstetri cians differ in Opinion and practice, to fit it for the uses of American medical students and Obstetricians. All notes and additions have been distinguished by enclosure in brackets J. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A d104 Book of Midwifery, Vol. 1 There he began to study Midwifery under E. C. J. Von Siebold, and soon developed a strong liking for this department of Medicine. In 1852 he visited Vienna, and afterwards England, Scotland, and Ireland, in order to study the methods of procedure in the Lying-in Institutions of these countries. Shortly after his return to Gottingen he published(1858) an excellent Compendium of Midwifery, and in 1860 was appointed Professor Extraordinarius of Midvifery in the University. The following year he was called to Freiburg as Prof. Ordinarius, and two years afterwards(1864) removed to Konigsberg, which however he again quitted on being appointed(1865) Professor at Breslau. In 1870 in conjunction with Crede, S. started the Archiv fr Gynakologie, and throughout his life was a constant and valuable contributor. Meanwhile he was accumulating a large practice, which however did not prevent him from devoting much time to the great work with which his name is mainly associated, viz. the Lehrbuch der Geburtshulfe, of which the following pages are a translation. The Lehrbuch appeared in 1878, and became so popular that in 1880 and edition was called for, and S. was far advanced with its preparation at the time of his death. Symptoms of failing health appeared in the summer of 1880, but so great was S. 's enthusiasm for his work, that it was with difficulty that he could be persuaded to abandon it for a season. Book Description
Excerpt from The Science and Art of Midwifery The third edition of this work, published in 1885, was intended to present to the reader a picture of the most advanced obstetrical teachings of that date. In the brief interval, however, that has elapsed since then the changes that have taken place in both the theory and practice of obstetrics have made it necessary for me to present to the profession what is essentially a new book. Thus many modifications in the theory have resulted from more careful observations in anatomy and pathology, and from fruitful physio logical investigations. It has been my endeavor to interweave aseptic precautions with all branches of obstetric art without, how ever, insisting upon pedantic measures which experience has shown to be needless. But the noblest conquests of the past years have been the result of the employment of modern surgery for the relief or removal of a host of complications formerly regarded as beyond the pale of human help. In making needed alterations I have not felt it obligatory when new discoveries have destroyed the value of former deductions to retain these in order to maintain a reputation for consistency. I thank the medical press and the medical profession of this country and Great Britain for the flattering welcome they have hitherto extended to this treatise, and trust that in its new form it may command a like degree of favor. For the preparation of the index special thanks are once more due to my friend Dr. W. H. Flint, whose painstaking accuracy will be evident to those who have occasion to consult these pages.
