Book Description
Excerpt from A Treatise on Geometrical Optics In this treatise one of my aims has been to introduce a new method of determining the properties of a symmetrical optical instrument, in which the angle of divergence of a small pencil, rather than any coordinate of its origin, has been adopted as the leading feature. By this method, which is implicitly contained in Cotes's well-known theorem of the apparent distance, all the cardinal properties, notably the power of the system, follow immediately from the application of a simple geometrical formula. Although that theorem dates from the middle of the eighteenth century, yet the present method needs the help of Helmholtz's theorem to render it complete; hence the priority of the proof of the existence of the cardinal points rests with Gauss. But the analytical method adopted by the latter tends, in my opinion, to disguise the essential fact that geometrical foci exist only as a first approximation; and in any particular case a lengthy calculation is necessary to obtain the final convergent of the continued fraction on which his results depend. The simplification that results from the use of the angle of divergence will, I think, be clear on reference to Chapter V. and to the chapter on Aberration. I have attempted to obviate as far as possible the difficulties of sign that arise in connection with the directions in which distances are to be measured by the convention that all lengths on the same straight line are to be treated as algebraical quantities, and, where an origin of light is the origin of measurement, by taking the direction in which the light travels as positive. Book Description
Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on Geometrical Optics The present work is essentially an abridgment of my larger treatise on Geometrical Optics, and is primarily intended for the use of students who require an exposition of the principles of Optics and their application in the use and construction of optical instruments, without very extended and complicated mathematical analysis. It is elementary, inasmuch as it uses no mathematics beyond trigonometry. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Treatise on Optics 1. When a material object is presented before us, we become by vision sensible of its existence and figure. In such a case light is said to be propagated from the object to our eyes, and the science of Optics has for its design the examination of the circumstances of such propagation. The science is divided into Geometrical and Physical Optics. In Geometrical Optics the circumstances of the transmission and modification of light are computed on certain laws established by experiment; in Physical Optics these laws are accounted for on hypotheses of the structure of bodies, and of the matter filling the space in which they are placed. In a similar manner in Geometrical Astronomy the phenomena of heavenly bodies are calculated on observed laws which their apparent motions are found to obey; in Physical Astronomy these apparent laws are shewn to result from the hypothesis of Gravitation. The former branch of the science is the subject of the present treatise, wherein from certain laws established by experiment under simple circumstances, the course of light under more complex circumstances is computed, and the results applied to the construction of Optical Instruments. Book Description
Excerpt from A Treatise on Optics Optics by Dr. Brewster was, principally, to introduce an Appendix, containing such a discussion of the subjects of Reflexion and Refraction, as might adapt the work to use in those of our colleges in which considerable exten. Sion is given to the course of N atural Philosophy. In this revision, I have thought it beet, without specially calling the attention of the reader to them, to correct such errors as my comparatively limited knowledge of the subject assured me, would not have been passed over by the author in e second Edition.
