Book Description
HUGH Sawrey (1919-1999) was one of Australia's most well-known artists during his lifetime. In a professional career that spanned nearly 35 years, he produced an enormous volume of work depicting scenes of the outback and the pastoral industries that operated there. From the time he left school, his formative years were taken up with a succession of low paying itinerant jobs across rural Australia. From shearing to stock work, he experienced first-hand many of the subjects he later included on his canvases. While his creative abilities were evident from the outset, drawing and painting could only be conducted in downtime, often with rudimentary materials, and he never had the opportunity to properly develop his craft until well into his 40s. However, by the 1960s Hugh Sawrey managed to acquire some formal training and presented his first solo show in Brisbane in 1965. His works struck a chord with local collectors and he quickly found recognition. Interest continued to build in his work over subsequent years and this allowed him to develop and hone the quality of his output. From the very start, horses were the foundation stones of many of his representations of rural life and early 20th century society. And over time he focused his painting abilities on their representation in ever more dynamic and expressive ways. Today, 20 years after his death, it is the depiction of the horse that is his most enduring legacy in the world of art. During his life there were few Australian artists that could match his abilities to capture the weight, strength and personality of the horse and their symbiotic relationship to people. And today, long after working horses have been largely replaced by machinery, the equine paintings of Hugh Sawrey stand as one of Australian Art's most extensive contributions to this historical genre. A thousand Miles Beyond showcases a wide range of equine themed work covering his professional working life from 1965 to 1991 and includes a detailed essay placing his works in a larger Australian visual art context. Edited by Anthony Sawrey.

Book Description
Shortlisted for the Adventure Travel Book of the Year at the Edward Stanford Travel Writing Awards. There are many reasons why it might seem unwise to walk, mostly alone, through the Middle East. That, in part, is exactly why Leon McCarron did it. From Jerusalem, McCarron followed a series of wild hiking trails that trace ancient trading and pilgrimage routes and traverse some of the most contested landscapes in the world. In the West Bank, he met families struggling to lead normal lives amidst political turmoil and had a surreal encounter with the world's oldest and smallest religious sect. In Jordan, he visited the ruins of Hellenic citadels and trekked through the legendary Wadi Rum. His journey culminated in the vast deserts of the Sinai, home to Bedouin tribes and haunted by the ghosts of Biblical history. The Land Beyond is a journey through time, from the quagmire of current geopolitics to the original ideals of the faithful, through the layers of history, culture and religion that have shaped the Holy Land. But at its heart, it is the story of people, not politics and of the connections that can bridge seemingly insurmountable barriers.

Book Description
Journey of a Thousand Miles tells the remarkable story of a boy who sacrificed almost everything – family, financial security, childhood and his reputation in China’s insular classical music world – to fulfil his promise as a classical pianist. Lang Lang was born in Shenyang in north-eastern China just after the end of the Cultural Revolution. He began piano lessons at three years old and by age ten had been awarded a place at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. In order to continue his studies he moved thousands of miles from home, living with his exacting father in a cramped, shared apartment, while his mother stayed at home to earn the money to pay his fees. At fifteen he moved to the United States to take up a scholarship at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia; by nineteen he was selling out Carnegie Hall. His tutor and mentor Daniel Barenboim was perhaps the first to describe him as ‘extraordinarily talented’; today his assessment is shared by millions. Now in adulthood, Lang Lang tours relentlessly, delighting sell-out audiences with his trademark flamboyance and showmanship. Journey of a Thousand Miles is a tale of heartbreak, drama and ultimately triumph. His inspiring story demonstrates the courage and self-sacrifice required to achieve artistic greatness.

Book Description
Miss Blandfords’ 'A Thousand Miles Up the Nile ' is one of the classics of the literature of Egypt. Her work as an Egyptologist, and deserved reputation as such, began with the expedition of which it is the narrative. The author has studied her subjects with great care; she has consulted and compared authorities ancient and modern, with much industry; and her examination of the remains she describes was a labor of love and enthusiasm. . . Nor does she confine her attention to art and archaeology. She gives many fresh and lively sketches of the often described life of the dahabecah; of its great events, such as sand-storms and of the natives.

Book Description
After a decade of silence, Dee and Ben reunite for a road trip they once promised to take. It’s going to be a bumpy ride. Dee Matthews is the cohost of the smash-hit podcast Did I Forget To Tell You?, where she interviews family, friends, and past lovers. Nothing is off limits, except for one man (known on the show only as Name Redacted) who happens to be her high school best friend Ben. During their senior year spring break, Dee and Ben took a road trip to visit Ben’s grandma. They buried a time capsule in her backyard, pledging to return in ten years to open it. Then their friendship fell apart in spectacular fashion. They haven’t spoken to each other since. Ben Porter’s life since that moment has been unexciting but comfortable, until his grandma reveals a family secret that flips his whole world upside down. Her dying wish is for him to stop doing what is safest and go after what he really wants. He starts by showing up on Dee’s doorstep with every intention of fulfilling their long-ago promise. Despite her reservations, Dee can’t say no. This trip could be her chance to give her listeners the Name Redacted interview they’ve been begging for—and finally put her unresolved feelings for Ben to rest. As the miles fly by, Dee and Ben's friendship reignites. But the closer they get to reaching their destination, the more apparent it becomes that their attraction to each other cannot be ignored. Their last adventure ended in disaster, and they’re about to find out if any hope of a future together is in the rear view mirror.
