Book Description
Excerpt from A d104 Book on Graphic Statics This text was prepared for the author's students in elementary Graphic Statics and Stresses. It has not been the object of the writer to discover new principles, but rather to present the subject clearly and logically. Many texts on Graphic Statics are open to the criticism that they have a tendency to state principles and give constructions without proofs, and the student is therefore compelled to memorize propositions and constructions without being taught the underlying principles. It has been the aim of the writer to give the proofs, together with full explanations of the constructions. No attempt has been made to give elaborate solutions which have little or no practical applications. Particular attention has been given to the order of presentation; and the text has been divided into chapters, articles, and numbered i sections to facilitate easy references. Most of the material in Part I and Part II has been used in printed form by the author's students for several years. It is hoped that the material in Part II, Part III, and Part IV will be found of assistance to the practicing engineer. The author gratefully acknowledges his indebtedness to Ira O. Baker, Professor of Civil Engineering, University of Illinois, for many valuable suggestions and criticisms. Book Description
Excerpt from Graphical Analysis: A d104 Book on Graphic Statics This book has been developed from notes and blue prints prepared by the writer and used in his classes at the University of Illinois. Certain additional material has been added, a part of which has been briefly presented in a number of articles con tributed by the writer to the technical press. The notes referred to above were modeled after a set prepared by Dr. N. C. Ricker, several years before, to whom the writer is greatly indebted. Many additional problems might have been added and the discussion greatly extended. This is especially true of Chapters IV and VII to X inclusive. However, it has been thought best to keep the book to smaller proportions, and the writer believes that a thorough mastery of the constructions and solutions here presented will give the student an excellent grasp of the subject. The object has been to deal with the analysis of stresses rather than with design or the computation of loads. Nevertheless it has seemed desirable to give some attention to the determination of loads, and Chapter IX has been devoted almost exclusively to design. Material and ideas have, of course, been drawn from many sources. The writer is especially indebted to Prof. C. R. Clark for assist ance in connection with the early part of the work and to Prof. L. H. Provine for encouragement and constructive criticism. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Written for statisticians, computer scientists, geographers, research and applied scientists, and others interested in visualizing data, this book presents a unique foundation for producing almost every quantitative graphic found in scientific journals, newspapers, statistical packages, and data visualization systems. It was designed for a distributed computing environment, with special attention given to conserving computer code and system resources. While the tangible result of this work is a Java production graphics library, the text focuses on the deep structures involved in producing quantitative graphics from data. It investigates the rules that underlie pie charts, bar charts, scatterplots, function plots, maps, mosaics, and radar charts. These rules are abstracted from the work of Bertin, Cleveland, Kosslyn, MacEachren, Pinker, Tufte, Tukey, Tobler, and other theorists of quantitative graphics.

The high-level language of R is recognized as one of the mostpowerful and flexible statistical software environments, and israpidly becoming the standard setting for quantitative analysis, statistics and graphics. R provides free access to unrivalledcoverage and cutting-edge applications, enabling the user to applynumerous statistical methods ranging from simple regression to timeseries or multivariate analysis. Building on the success of the author’s bestsellingStatistics: An Introduction using R, The R Book ispacked with worked examples, providing an all inclusive guide to R,ideal for novice and more accomplished users alike. The bookassumes no background in statistics or computing and introduces theadvantages of the R environment, detailing its applications in awide range of disciplines. Provides the first comprehensive reference manual for the Rlanguage, including practical guidance and full coverage of thegraphics facilities. Introduces all the statistical models covered by R, beginningwith simple classical tests such as chi-square and t-test. Proceeds to examine more advance methods, from regression andanalysis of variance, through to generalized linear models, generalized mixed models, time series, spatial statistics, multivariate statistics and much more. The R Book is aimed at undergraduates, postgraduates andprofessionals in science, engineering and medicine. Book Description
For courses in Statics, Strength of Materials, and Structural Principles in Architecture, Construction, and Engineering Technology. Statics and Strength of Materials for Architecture and Building Construction, Fourth Edition, offers students an accessible, visually oriented introduction to structural theory that doesn't rely on calculus. Instead, illustrations and examples of building frameworks and components enable students to better visualize the connection between theoretical concepts and the experiential nature of real buildings and materials. This new edition includes fully worked examples in each chapter, a companion website with extra practice problems, and expanded treatment of load tracing.
