The Science and Technology of Coal and Coal Utilization
Author: Bernard Cooper
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1468445804
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 672
Book Description
Filling the need for new and improved energy sources is an area where societal effects of science and technology will surely increase. The editors and authors have attempted in this volume to present the most current work on the science and technology of coal and coal utilization. Serious disagreement exists on several key issues such as carbon dioxide release and acid rain. At the same time, however, coal is the world's most abundant fossil fuel and will have to be used to supply the world's energy needs for the next several decades. The 1979 National Research Council Report, "En ergy in Transition: 1985-2010," has estimated that the United States alone may go from a 1979 coal consumption of 14 QUADS per annum (approximately 750 million tons per year) to approximately 40-50 QUADS per annum (approximately 2 billion tons per year) by the year 2010. If this scale of coal utilization is to become a reality, a significant level of research and development will be necessary to establish advanced process technologies and to improve related areas such as materials and instrumentation. The editors hope that this volume will allow a technically educated person to become aware of the several aspects of coal utilization, from characterization of coal itself to the processes of coal utilization. B. R. Cooper and W. A. Ellingson March, 1983 vii Contents 1. The Problems of Sulphur
Author: Sam Stuart
Publisher: Butterworth-Heinemann
ISBN: 1483162087
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 366
Book Description
The Problems of Sulphur discusses all aspects of the problems associated with sulfur in coal. The book is divided into three parts. Part 1 addresses the forms of sulfur in coal and evaluates processes directed at the chemical removal of sulphur. Part 2 expands on this to look at alternative means of removing sulfur both physically and biologically, sulfur removal during the combustion of coal and flue gas desulfurization processes. Part 3 looks at the role of sulphates in the atmosphere from the points of view of their formation, transport and deposition and of their effects on health, materials and the atmosphere. The book will be of value to engineers, environmentalists, and chemists.

Clean Utilization of Coal
Author: Yuda Yürüm
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401710457
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 320
Book Description
This volume contains the lectures presented at the Advanced Study Institute on "Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of Catalytic Solid Fuel Conversion for the Production of aean Synthetic Fuels" which was held at Ak~;ay, Edremit, Tiirkiye, between July 21 and August 3, 1991. The book includes 23 chapters originally written for the meeting by distinguished scientists an technologists in the field. l would like to acknowledge the contribution of each of the authors in the book. Their efforts have shed light on our understanding in coal science research and better utilization of coal. Three main subjects: structure and reactivity of coal; cleaning of coal and its products, and factors affecting environmental balance of energy usage and solutions for future, were discussed in the Institute and these are presented under six groups in the book. I hope that of great use to research workers from academic and industrial background. the book will be Many people contributed to the success of the Institute on which this volume was based. I take this occasion to thank my colleagues who lectured in the Institute, both for their efforts during the two weeks and their expertly prepared lecture notes that reached to me in time. The Institute was generously sponsored by the Scientific and Environmental Affairs Dh·ision of the NATO and their contribution is deeply acknowledged.

Coal Desulfurization
Author: S. K. Kawatra
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 9789056996963
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 376
Book Description
This book was written to provide a comprehensive survey of the current state-of-the-art information in coal preparation, with particular emphasis on coal desulfrization. The primary audience for this book will be practising coal preparation engineers who need complete information about all of the coal preparation and desulphurization technologies that are available now, or that may be available in the future. It will also be valuable for coal researchers who need details and comparative data for cutting-edge technologies that are still under development. The main emphasis is on physical coal preparation, but chapters also include chemical and biological technologies that are under development, but not yet used in industrial practice. Along with the successful technologies, also included are details of processes and techniques that were attempted, but were subsequently abandoned, along with discussions of the reasons they were abandoned.
