This novel was published on December 19, 1843, and the first print run of 6,000 copies sold out on Christmas Eve of that year. The publication of the first edition was fraught with complications, and although the book was met with positive reviews, earnings on the book fell far short of Dickens's expectations, and financial stress caused divisions between Dickens and the original publisher, Chapman & Hall.
