Excerpt from A Subject Catalogue, or Finding List of Books in the Reference Library: With an Index of Subjects and Personal Names; 1889; Including Additions Made Up to February 1st, 1889 The Toronto Public Library, which contains volumes, was first opened for public use in 1884, and is divided into the Reference Library and the Central and Branch Circulating Libraries. For the first two years the efforts of the Management were devoted to the increase and organization of the Circulating Libraries, and it has only been during the past three years that they have attempted to lay the foundations of a Reference Library. The present Catalogue contains all accessions to the Library until February 1st, 1889, and covers the same ground as the Card Catalogue. Which has been in use from the first, but differs from it, in being strictly a subject catalogue with complete indices. Where necessary, entries have been repeated under different subject-headings when the book refers 130 two or more subjects.
