An Absorption-line Study of the Galactic Neutral-hydrogen at 21 Cm
Author: Michael Paul Hughes
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Interstellar hydrogen
Languages : en
Pages : 86
Book Description
The paper describes observations of galactic 21-cm line absorption in the spectra of ninety-seven radio sources made with the two-element interferometer at the Owens Valley Radio Observatory. Measurements of 21-cm absorption are of fundamental importance because they yield directly information on the optical depth of the galactic hydrogen. Almost all of the many studies of the 21-cm line are concerned with observations in emission, and require assumptions concerning the optical depth before the data can be interpreted in terms of the temperature or columnar density of the gas.

Fundamental Astronomy
Author: Hannu Karttunen
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3662530457
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 548
Book Description
Fundamental Astronomy is a well-balanced, comprehensive introduction to classical and modern astronomy. While emphasizing both the astronomical concepts and the underlying physical principles, the text provides a sound basis for more profound studies in the astronomical sciences. This is the fifth edition of the successful undergraduate textbook and reference work. It has been extensively modernized and extended in the parts dealing with extragalactic astronomy and cosmology. You will also find augmented sections on the solar system and extrasolar planets as well as a new chapter on astrobiology. Long considered a standard text for physical science majors, Fundamental Astronomy is also an excellent reference work for dedicated amateur astronomers.
