Book Description
In his illuminated books,William Blake combined his handwritten text with his exuberant imagery on pages the like of which had not been seen since the great decorated books of the Middle Ages. To read such books as Jerusalem, America and Songs of Innocence and of Experience in cold letterpress bears no comparison to seeing and reading them as Blake conceived them, infused with his sublime and exhilarating colours. At times tiny figures and forms dance among the lines of the text, flames appear to burn up the page, and dense passages of Biblical-sounding text are brought to a jarring halt by startling images of death, destruction and liberation. This edition, produced together with The William Blake Trust, contains all the pages of Blakes twenty or so illuminated books reproduced in true size, an appendix with all Blakes text set in type and an introduction by the noted Blake scholar, David Bindman. They can at last become part of the lives of all lovers of art and poetry.

Book Description
Milton is a difficult and cryptic poem for those uninitiated in the ways of Blake's allusive and allegorical style. In an introductory essay, the editors directly address the nature of the poem's complexity, demonstrate how Blake's methods set out to disconcert conventional concepts of time, space, and human identity, and suggest some ways readers coming to Milton for the first time can understand and enjoy the challenges it offers. The editors also present a plate-by-plate commentary on how the illustrations contribute to the creation of a composite, visual-verbal experience. The extensive notes to the newly-edited letterpress text will also assist readers through Milton, its central themes and its byways, its heights and its depths. An equally helpful introduction and notes are provided for the three shorter works. Scholars will find much new information in this volume.

Book Description
Can poem and picture collaborate successfully in a composite art of text and design? Or does one art inevitably dominate the other? W.J.T. Mitchell maintains that Blake's illuminated poems are an exception to Suzanne Langer's claim that "there are no happy marriages in art—only successful rape." Drawing on over one hundred reproductions of Blake's pictures, this book shows that neither the graphic nor the poetic aspect of his composite art consistently predominates: their relationship is more like an energetic rivalry, a dialogue between vigorously independent modes of expression. W.J.T. Mitchell is Professor of English and Art and Design at the University of Chicago and editor of Critical Inquiry. Originally published in 1978. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Book Description
"The nature of William Blake's genius and of his art is most completely expressed in his Illuminated Books. In order to give full and free expression to his vision Blake invented a method of printing that enabled him to created works in which words and images combine to form pages uniquely rich in content and beautiful in form. It is only through the pages as originally conceived and published by the poet himself that Blake's meaning can be fully experienced."--Publisher's description.

Book Description
Excerpt from William Blake's Illuminated Books: A Census A census of Blake's 'illuminated Books' was included as Section E in my Bibliography of Blake, printed for the Grolier Club Of New York in 1921. I commented then on the fact that to complete the task of tracing all the existing copies was clearly impossible, Since a number of them were certain to have been temporarily lost to view and would only appear again too late for inclusion in my book. In the thirty-two years that have elapsed Since the Bibliography was issued this suggestion has been fully confirmed. Many more copies of the books have come to light, and as they attracted my notice in private hands or passed through the sale rooms I have lost no opportunity of making full descriptions of them, and of recording their provenance. I have also been able to re-examine others, or see them myself for the first time, during visits made to the United States of America. Even SO it was plain, when I formed the project of making a revision of the census, that I could not do this satisfactorily unless I had an expert collaborator in the United States, Since SO large a proportion of the books had found their way over there. I was therefore exceedingly fortunate in being able to interest Edwin Wolf 2nd in the matter and to persuade him to undertake with me the work of revision by dealing with the books on his side of the Atlantic. Mr Wolf was already a Blake scholar by virtue of the work he had done in preparing the catalogue of the great Blake exhibition held in Philadelphia in 1939, where he had the great advantage of being able to compare several copies of many of the books. He also possessed through his natural instincts and his profession a mind attuned to the niceties of accurate bibliography. The preparation of this new census of Blake's work has occupied a number Of years, both Mr Wolf and I having other occupations which could not be denied, he as a bookseller and I as a surgeon; but this did not disturb me, Since I knew from long experience that no bibliographical work will gain by being hurried. The record will always be more nearly complete the longer it takes, and SO it has proved to be in the present instance. In reprinting this section Of the Bibliography as a separate publication it has also seemed to be worth while to include ina revised form the introduction which appeared as part of the Bibliographical Preface in 1921.
