Book Description
We analyze the structural determinants of two widely used measures of price discovery between multiple markets that trade closely-related securities. Using a structural cointegration model, we show that both the information share (IS) and component share (CS) measures account for the relative avoidance of noise trading and liquidity shocks, but that only the IS can provide information on the relative informativeness of individual markets. In particular, the IS of one market is higher if it incorporates more new information and/or impounds less liquidity shocks. Use of the CS in conjunction with the IS can help sort out the confounding effects of the two types of shocks. Furthermore, we find that the IS only accounts for the immediate (one-period) responses of market prices to the news innovation which implies that the IS estimates based on high sampling frequencies may be distorted by transitory frictions and may miss important price discovery dynamics.

Book Description
In this paper we propose a new approach for the econometric analysis of the dynamics of price discovery using a structural cointegration model for the price changes in arbitrage linked markets. Our methodology characterizes the dynamics of price discovery based on the impulse response functions from an identified structural cointegration model, and we measure the efficiency of a market's price discovery by the absolute magnitude of cumulative pricing errors in the price discovery process. We apply our methodology to investigate the extent to which the US dollar contributes to the price discovery of the yen/euro exchange rate. Our results show that substantial price discovery of JPY/EUR occurs through the dollar, and that the efficiency of the dollar's price discovery is positively related to the relative liquidity of the dollar markets versus the cross rate market.

Book Description
This thesis is concerned with the question of how price discovery happens between equity index spot and future markets. We look at existing price discovery measures and the recent discussion around these to evaluate whether the spot or future market dominates the price discovery process in the case of the S&P 500 as well as the DAX index. Besides the widely used price discovery measures of Hasbrouck's (1995) information share and the component share, we apply a structural cointegration model as proposed by Yan and Zivot (2007, 2010) to identify price discovery impulse response functions and price discovery efficiency losses for the individual markets. This allows for a dynamic approach to price discovery as compared to the standard measures. We are one of the first studies to apply Yan and Zivot's proposed model to equity indices. We find that the different price discovery measures might give opposite indications of price discovery dominance, whereas the newly applied approach of Yan and Zivot contributes the majority of price discovery to the futures markets in both data sets.

Book Description
We propose a new measure to establish price leadership among multiple related price series using a Multivariate Markov Chain. This new measure, the Price Leadership Share (PLS), can easily be calculated when prices are related but not fully cointegrated or with more than two price series simultaneously, offering advantages over the existing price discovery measures. In addition, we propose a price leadership concentration index for comparative analysis. The measure is tested on six gold contracts, including spot, futures, and ETF, over a two-year period. Results show that gold futures contracts, mainly the CME contract, have a major role in price discovery confirming the previous literature's findings. Overall, the PLS measure overcomes the limits of other price discovery measures. Finally, a Python implementation of the PLS is reported in the Appendix.

Book Description
The field of financial econometrics has exploded over the last decade This book represents an integration of theory, methods, and examples using the S-PLUS statistical modeling language and the S+FinMetrics module to facilitate the practice of financial econometrics. This is the first book to show the power of S-PLUS for the analysis of time series data. It is written for researchers and practitioners in the finance industry, academic researchers in economics and finance, and advanced MBA and graduate students in economics and finance. Readers are assumed to have a basic knowledge of S-PLUS and a solid grounding in basic statistics and time series concepts. This Second Edition is updated to cover S+FinMetrics 2.0 and includes new chapters on copulas, nonlinear regime switching models, continuous-time financial models, generalized method of moments, semi-nonparametric conditional density models, and the efficient method of moments. Eric Zivot is an associate professor and Gary Waterman Distinguished Scholar in the Economics Department, and adjunct associate professor of finance in the Business School at the University of Washington. He regularly teaches courses on econometric theory, financial econometrics and time series econometrics, and is the recipient of the Henry T. Buechel Award for Outstanding Teaching. He is an associate editor of Studies in Nonlinear Dynamics and Econometrics. He has published papers in the leading econometrics journals, including Econometrica, Econometric Theory, the Journal of Business and Economic Statistics, Journal of Econometrics, and the Review of Economics and Statistics. Jiahui Wang is an employee of Ronin Capital LLC. He received a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Washington in 1997. He has published in leading econometrics journals such as Econometrica and Journal of Business and Economic Statistics, and is the Principal Investigator of National Science Foundation SBIR grants. In 2002 Dr. Wang was selected as one of the "2000 Outstanding Scholars of the 21st Century" by International Biographical Centre.

Book Description
A comprehensive guide to the dynamic area of finance known as market microstructure Interest in market microstructure has grown dramatically in recent years due largely in part to the rapid transformation of the financial market environment by technology, regulation, and globalization. Looking at market transactions at the most granular level—and taking into account market structure, price discovery, information flows, transaction costs, and the trading process—market microstructure also forms the basis of high-frequency trading strategies that can help professional investors generate profits and/or execute optimal transactions. Part of the Robert W. Kolb Series in Finance, Market Microstructure skillfully puts this discipline in perspective and examines how the working processes of markets impact transaction costs, prices, quotes, volume, and trading behavior. Along the way, it offers valuable insights on how specific features of the trading process like the existence of intermediaries or the environment in which trading takes place affect the price formation process. Explore issues including market structure and design, transaction costs, information flows, and disclosure Addresses market microstructure in emerging markets Covers the legal and regulatory issues impacting this area of finance Contains contributions from both experienced financial professionals and respected academics in this field If you're looking to gain a firm understanding of market microstructure, this book is the best place to start.

Book Description
This book contributes to re cent developments on the statistical analysis of multiple time series in the presence of regime shifts. Markov-switching models have become popular for modelling non-linearities and regime shifts, mainly, in univariate eco nomic time series. This study is intended to provide a systematic and operational ap proach to the econometric modelling of dynamic systems subject to shifts in regime, based on the Markov-switching vector autoregressive model. The study presents a comprehensive analysis of the theoretical properties of Markov-switching vector autoregressive processes and the related statistical methods. The statistical concepts are illustrated with applications to empirical business cyde research. This monograph is a revised version of my dissertation which has been accepted by the Economics Department of the Humboldt-University of Berlin in 1996. It con sists mainly of unpublished material which has been presented during the last years at conferences and in seminars. The major parts of this study were written while I was supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschajt (DFG), Berliner Graduier tenkolleg Angewandte Mikroökonomik and Sondeiforschungsbereich 373 at the Free University and Humboldt-University of Berlin. Work was finally completed in the project The Econometrics of Macroeconomic Forecasting founded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) at the Institute of Economies and Statistics, University of Oxford. It is a pleasure to record my thanks to these institutions for their support of my research embodied in this study.
