This is the first English translation of the seminal book by Katharina Reiß and Hans Vermeer, Grundlegung einer allgemeinen Translationstheorie, first published in 1984. It is perhaps axiomatic to say that translation is as old as language, for the different language communities render translation mandatory for their interaction.
