Book Description
Excerpt from A Series of Seven Sermons on the Doctrine of Holy Scripture and of the Church, of England Respecting the Sacrament of Baptism, the Rite of Confirmation and the Sacrament of the Lords Supper, in Their Mutual Relations: Preached in St. Mary's Walthamstow, in View of the Confirmation of the Younger Members of the Church Residing in That Parish God. The great principles of that law were still in such measure handed down from one generation to another, that even the wicked were restrained from the open renunciation of the worship of the true God, and the righteous found in them a light, faint as it might be, whereby to guide their doubtful steps, or to direct them in the religious instruction of their children. Meantime some, perhaps mutilated copies or distinct parts, themselves injured and corrupted, would doubtless still be retained. And the context leaves it clear, that in the midst of the general destruction of the copies of the Law, some pious priest had secreted, somewhere within the precincts of the temple, that which had been originally written by the hand of Moses, and from which alone all copies must have derived their correctness and authority.
