Book Description
Excerpt from A Private in the Guards The fortune of war gave me eighteen months in the ranks in the Guards. I have thought I could perform no better service than describe the social life and the spirit in these historic regiments of the British Army. I should explain for those who do not know it, that the Bill Browns are the Grenadiers, the Jocks are Scots Guards, the Taffies are the Welsh Guards, the Micks are the Irish, and the Coalies are the Coldstream. Amongst the rank and file they are only referred to by their nicknames. So also in this book. An intense rivalry reigns amongst these regiments, and comparisons are nowhere more odious. The presence of the young Prince of Wales in the Grenadiers no doubt gave that regiment great prestige, but the Scots Guards yield to none. The record of each and all for the four years of conflict is most remarkable. However, it has not been the war which has been most interesting for me, but the men. We had amongst us a number of those American volunteers, the advance party of America's great manhood, who were feted in London in 1917, and I have used the point of view of these Americans and their adventures together with my own as a touch-stone for our Army institutions and customs. Book Description
Excerpt from Guards of the Guards: Or the Fortunes of War It was a black night near the end of March in the year 1777, and on that very blackness depended the fate of a gallant officer in His Majesty's service, of a certain maid far away in His Majesty's rebellious American colonies, and the telling of this tale; so often do we find the most momentous instant in our lives hang by the slender thread of a seeming unimportant circumstance. Book Description
Excerpt from The Story of the Guard: A Chronicle of the War "That the honorable enterprises, noble adventures, and deeds of arms, performed in the wars between England and France may be properly related, and held in perpetual remembrance - to the end that brave men taking example from them may be encouraged in their well-doing, I sit down to record a history deserving great praise; but, before I begin, I request of the Saviour of the world, who from nothing created all things, that He will have the goodness to inspire me with sense and sound understanding, to persevere in such manner, that all those who shall read may derive pleasure and instruction from my work, and that I may fall into their good graces. "It is said, and with truth, that all towns are built with many different stones, and that all large rivers are formed from many springs; so are sciences compiled by many learned persons, and what one is ignorant of is known to another; not but that everything is known sooner or later." ... - Sir John Froissart's Preface to his Chronicles of England, France, &c. Book Description
Excerpt from The Guards, Vol. 1 of 2: A Novel A Guannsum is a being sui generis, not in the vulgar interpretation of the swinish multitude, but in the most refined and sublimated acceptation of the word an individual select, distinct, and separate from the soldier or civilian of any other kind. Birth, rank, and fashion, hover round the standard of the Guards but above all, royal presence, the air of the court, (which must add a courtly air to a martial appear ance, ) all lend lustre to the warrior and the beau. His habits, as well as his habiliments, differ from the cavalry and infantry of the line his ton or fashion is peculiar to the corps, which gives, instead of borrowing, a goat or polish to others in the army and in high life. The Line has des often to ton da gamison but the Guards have a de portment, dress, and address of their own. By this it is not meant to assert, that a Guardsman never borrows any thing; he may par hasard borrow a trifle, from a rouleau at a gaming-table, to anheiress at a watering-place and (mirabile dictu possibly his neighbour's cara sposa at country quarters, pour passer is tcms but he never condescends to as sume an iota of style, elegance or refinement, from any source beyond the brigade; whilst, on the con trary, envying and admiring youths copy and imitate His Majesty's Guards with the extremest exertion and attention imaginable; and they (the Guards) are decidedly (as we say) the prototypes of the day. Book Description
Excerpt from Iron Times With the Guards Englishmen of to-day may be divided into two groups: one that derives its knowledge of the war from direct observation, another which is dependent on hearsay and on the newspapers. It is solely to the latter, the people at home, that this book is offered. It claims to be neither authoritative nor historical, being only a chronicle of such episodes as have come within the writer's experience. Yet contemporary narratives of memorable events, however fragmentary and whatever their merit, must surely deserve to be placed upon record. This belief must be the author's justification for adding to the ever-growing number of books dealing with the present war.
