Book Description
From the publication of his first book in 1905 until his death, Lord Dunsany (1878–1957) was an immensely popular Anglo-Irish writer. He has long been admired in the realms of fantasy, horror, and supernatural fiction and was a friend and colleague of writers W. B. Yeats, Lady Gregory, James Stephens, and Oliver St. John Gogarty. In recent years he has enjoyed a resurgence as a pioneering fantasy writer and an immense influence on later work in the genre. Critical Essays on Lord Dunsany is the first volume to assemble studies of Dunsany’s short fiction, novels, plays, and memoirs, as well as discussions of his influence on such writers as J. R. R. Tolkien and H. P. Lovecraft. The book also contains early articles and reviews by Yeats, Lovecraft, H. L. Mencken, Rebecca West, and Arthur C. Clarke. Seven original essays by leading contemporary scholars on Dunsany examine the use of medieval archetypes in his fantasy novels; the distinctiveness of his recurring character, clubman Joseph Jorkens; the influence of Don Quixote on his first novel, The Chronicles of Rodriguez (1922); the treatment of religion in his later novels; and other subjects. This anthology presents a comprehensive snapshot of Dunsany’s distinctive work and his contribution to fantasy fiction and world literature. Making a case for the continued study of this neglected but hugely influential writer, Critical Essays on Lord Dunsany will be of great interest to enthusiasts of Dunsany’s work as well as students and scholars of fantasy, horror, the supernatural, and Irish literature.

Book Description
THE CRIMES: Double homicides strike two small rural towns thousands of miles apart within weeks of each other. Frigid temperatures, bone chilling winds, a parallel journey, a raging all-consuming house fire, and one lone strand of evidence uncovered amongst the ashes begin a fifteen-year, unsolved investigation into the deaths of two innkeepers from rural New Hampshire and the tie between the deaths of two transients in a rural Florida cornfield. THE WAYWARD DAUGHTER: Brooke Kenney, a free-spirited, rebellious woman-child desperate to escape the confinement of a small town, embarks on the eighteen-month adventure of her lifetime. She meets up with her destiny in Alaska and becomes the eye of a storm bringing death to her family's doorstep. THE DRIFTER: Eddie Lee Mason, tired of cat burglaries and recently released from incarceration at the Walla Walla penitentiary, sets his sights on a fresh start in Alaska. Catching his first break in years, he waltzes into the young, innocent woman-child's world and gives her the ride and adventure of her lifetime-drifting from state to state, with various petty crimes ending in an obsessive love that roils out of control and leaves in its wake four homicides, all in the name of love. THE PRODIGAL SON: Luke Kenney, the brooding, unlikable son, and the only member of the tragic Kenney family left alive. A time bomb unleashed during one quiet night in a small, scenic New Hampshire town, the prodigal son returns to pick up the ashes of his family's untimely demise, tarnishing and bringing terror to the idyllic town he hoped to have left behind him.

Book Description
The roadside historical markers of East Tennessee highlight the fascinating personalities and significant events of a culturally and historically rich region. Forthree years, Knoxville News Sentinel columnist Fred Brown presented the storiesbehind the local markers placed by the Tennessee Historical Commission. He searchedthe highways and back roads of East Tennessee, tracking down markers with directionsthat were sometimes no more specific than ?Highway 11, Greene County.'Arranged by county, the entries link East Tennessee's past and present and highlightthe enormous diversity of the state's history from its prehistoric past through its involvement in World War II. The markers detail bitter struggles with Native Americans in the eighteenth century, but also explain the unique contribution of Cherokee culture and civilization, such as Sequoyah's development of the Cherokee syllabary. Brown commemorates the numerous Civil War sites throughout the region, but he also includes the service of East Tennesseans in later wars. One marker commemorates Kiffin Yates Rockwell, a founding pilot of the Lafayete Escadrille, a famed squadron of aviators in World War I. Another marker details the achievements of Sgt. Elbert L. Kinser of Greene County, who was posthumously decorated for his leadership of a First Marine Division Rifle Platoon on Okinawa. The markers also showcase East Tennessee's unique political history. They tell thestory of the ?lost state? of Franklin in the 1780s and record the region's efforts to secede from the state when Tennessee left the Union in 1861. Brown's narrative also explains the nature of opposing political factions throughout the decades through the biographies of their leaders, such as Elihu Embree, a Quaker abolitionist who founded an antislavery paper in East Tennessee. From the vantage of the armchair or out on the road, Marking Time is a surprisingand engaging trip on the byways of East Tennessee's politics, culture, and history through the stories of the men and women who shaped the state.
