Publisher: SME
ISBN: 0873354052
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 196
Book Description
Be Prepared Before You Have a Mine Accident Let’s hope you never face a mine disaster. But if you do, you need expert help at your fingertips, and you need it NOW! Keep this book close at hand, just in case. Buy extra copies for your key management and safety staff, and make sure they read it before you need it. Mine Rescue Manual, prepared and tested at the Colorado School of Mines, comes to the rescue with: • Clear descriptions • Best-practice benchmarks • Step-by-step lists • Procedural diagrams This book will be your go-to guide if there’s an accident at your mine. Mine Rescue Manual will walk you through every contingency: properly dealing with mine fires, toxic gases, loss of oxygen, injured workers, and more. It covers how to stay in legal, regulatory, and National Incident Management System compliance when responding to and reporting an accident. Also included is an extensive section on mine recovery (and potentially resuming operations) in the aftermath. Seismic Monitoring in Mines
Author: A.J. Mendecki
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9780412753008
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 280
Book Description
Routine seismic monitoring in mines was introduced over 30 years ago with two main objectives in mind: • immediate location of larger seIsmIC events to guide rescue operations; • prediction of large rockmass instabilities. The first objective was achieved fairly quickly, but with the subsequent development of mine communication systems, its strategic importance has diminished. The very limited success with prediction can, at least partially, be attributed to three factors: • seismic monitoring systems based on analogue technology that provided noisy and, frequently, poorly calibrated data of limited dynamic range; • the non-quantitative description of a seismic event by at best its local magnitude; and • the resultant non-quantitative analysis of seismicity, frequently through parameters of some statistical distributions, with a somewhat loose but imaginative physical interpretation. The introduction of modern digital seismic systems to mines and progress in the theory and methods of quantitative seismology have enabled the implementation of realtime seismic monitoring as a management tool, quantifying rockmass response to mining and achieving the first tangible results with prediction. A seismic event, being a sudden inelastic deformation within the rockmass, can now routinely be quantified in terms of seismic moment, its tensor, and radiated seismic energy, so that the overall size of, and stress released at, the seismic source can be estimated.

Miracle in the Mine
Author: José Henríquez
Publisher: HarperChristian + ORM
ISBN: 0310334969
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 146
Book Description
On October 13, 2010, millions of television viewers on five continents literally stopped everything to watch the amazing rescue of 33 men trapped underground in the mine of San José de Copiapó in northern Chile. What had seemed at first a hopeless tragedy later became a triumph of human effort, courage, perseverance, and expertise. For 17 excruciating days no one knew whether any of the miners had survived the collapse of the mine shaft, nor were the surviving miners aware of any rescue attempts. They spent a total of 69 days trapped underground. And it was there, in that frightening cavern, that one man took on the responsibility of encouraging the others and use the tragedy as an opportunity to share his faith. Miracle in the Mine is the story of José Henríquez. The testimony of a man who was no stranger to danger even before he found himself trapped 2,300 feet under the earth in the San José mine. A man who has unequivocally demonstrated his integrity, courage, and moral strength both before, during, and after the mining accident, and who is now using this experience to inspire the world.
