Book Description
Excerpt from A Memoir of Richard Durnford, D.D., Sometime Bishop of Chichester: With Selections From His Correspondence As my name alone appears as Editor on the title-page of this Memoir, I wish to state at the outset that the first two chapters have been written by the late Bishop's sons, Mr. Richard and Mr. Walter Durnford. In connexion with these two chapters I have only exercised an Editor's privilege of offering a few suggestions and revising the proof-sheets. My own acquaintance with the Bishop began with his episcopate, and I thought that the earlier portions of his life could be more satisfactorily dealt with by two members of his family whose ability was unquestionable, and who could draw partly on their own recollections, as well as upon old family records and traditions. For the remaining chapters, covering the period of the episcopate, I am solely responsible. The materials for the work throughout have been far from copious. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in our edition. We do, however, repair the vast majority of imperfections successfully; any imperfections that remain are intentionally left to preserve the state of such historical works.

The Victorian Clergy
Author: Alan Haig
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317268474
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 394
Book Description
First published in 1984. The Victorian clergy occupied a uniquely prominent position in English society. Their church generated continual and often rancorous debate and they played an important part in the local provision of education, welfare and justice. Politically, also, they were never negligible. But, while in 1830 the clergy still constituted England’s largest and wealthiest professional body, by 1914 their position was increasingly marginal. This title examines these changes and the issues in which the clergy was facing during this transition. The Victorian Clergy will be of particular interest to students of history.
