Claudins
Author: Kursad Turksen
Publisher: Humana Press
ISBN: 9781617791840
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
Since the initial discovery of the claudins, the field of tight junctions and cell polarity has become increasingly energized, mainly due to the fact that the claudins have provided an opportunity to understand the molecular basis of the tight junction function and their tissue specific roles. In Claudins: Methods and Protocols, experts and pioneers in the field provide an extensive collection of techniques involving these tight junction proteins. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular BiologyTM series format, chapters include brief introductions to their respective topics, detailed lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and key tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and practical, Claudins: Methods and Protocols serves as an ideal guide for all scientists seeking to further our understanding of this vital area of research.

Molecular Structure and Function of the Tight Junction
Author: Michael Fromm
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1573317497
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 357
Book Description
Aim of this volume is to clarify the relationship between molecular structure and function of tight junction proteins, as well as their regulation and their role in diseases. Current research may form a basis for future diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to diseases which seem to have not much in common but are characterized by defects of organ barriers, like Crohn's disease, renal hypertension, inner ear deafness, and cancerous diseases. Topics include the functions of distinct tight junction proteins as barrier or channel formers for solutes and water, characteristics of the tight junction in inflammatory bowel diseases, posttranslational modifications of tight junction proteins, the relation between renal tight junction proteins and blood pressure control, and the molecular structure of claudin-claudin interactions NOTE: Annals volumes are available for sale as individual books or as a journal. For information on institutional journal subscriptions, please visit www.blackwellpublishing.com/nyas. ACADEMY MEMBERS: Please contact the New York Academy of Sciences directly to place your order (www.nyas.org). Members of the New York Academy of Science receive full-text access to the Annals online and discounts on print volumes. The Impact of Food Bioactives on Health
Author: Kitty Verhoeckx
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319161040
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 341
Book Description
“Infogest” (Improving Health Properties of Food by Sharing our Knowledge on the Digestive Process) is an EU COST action/network in the domain of Food and Agriculture that will last for 4 years from April 4, 2011. Infogest aims at building an open international network of institutes undertaking multidisciplinary basic research on food digestion gathering scientists from different origins (food scientists, gut physiologists, nutritionists...). The network gathers 70 partners from academia, corresponding to a total of 29 countries. The three main scientific goals are: Identify the beneficial food components released in the gut during digestion; Support the effect of beneficial food components on human health; Promote harmonization of currently used digestion models Infogest meetings highlighted the need for a publication that would provide researchers with an insight into the advantages and disadvantages associated with the use of respective in vitro and ex vivo assays to evaluate the effects of foods and food bioactives on health. Such assays are particularly important in situations where a large number of foods/bioactives need to be screened rapidly and in a cost effective manner in order to ultimately identify lead foods/bioactives that can be the subject of in vivo assays. The book is an asset to researchers wishing to study the health benefits of their foods and food bioactives of interest and highlights which in vitro/ex vivo assays are of greatest relevance to their goals, what sort of outputs/data can be generated and, as noted above, highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the various assays. It is also an important resource for undergraduate students in the ‘food and health’ arena.
