Book Description
Journal kept by the harpooner on the Nantucket whale ship Young Eagle during her maiden voyage in the Pacific. The log, which records the entire voyage, was kept by the boatsteerer or harpooner, Joseph Reynolds Luce. The Young Eagle, captained by Benjamin A. Coleman, fished in Western and Japan grounds. The journal begins with an entry dated July 12, 1832 and ends on Oct. 16, 1835. Places mentioned or visited include the Galapagos, the coast of Peru, Hawaii (where they recruited), and Cabo San Lucas in Baja California. It was a successful voyage, returning 2625 barrels of sperm oil. It was also an eventful one... At the end of the book are two pages giving details of ships spoken, including master, home port, length of cruise, and amount of oil. Another page contains 68 whale stamps tabulating a "List of Whale Taken by the Bots." On the final page the names Joseph R. Luce and Bartholemew Garret appear. The front cover is boldly labeled: "Log Book / J. R. Luce."

Book Description
Journal of a whaling voyage written in English and German between 1846 and 1850. The journal documents the voyages of the whaling vessel Elisabeth Starbuck of Nantucket, under the captains Henry P. Collier and Elijah Parker. It is written from both ends, with the first portion written in English by Elijah Parker, ship's master at the time, and the latter portion written in German by Friedrich Hermann Wulff, presumably after Parker became Captain. Parker's log documents the ship's progress from the Southern Atlantic, down around the Cape Horn, and back up the west coast of South America before heading further west into the Pacific. There are four whale stamps throughout the volume: three at the entry for September 9, 1846 and another one at September 30, 1846. Following Parker's entries are a few pages with evidence of botanical specimens followed by two pages of log entries documenting the start of a voyage from Hobart, Tasmania to San Francisco in July of 1850. There are a few blank pages, and pages with errant notes before a series of records documenting tobacco rations and receipts for named crew members. The following pages include a few sparse notes and entries, including transactions signed by 'Captain' Parker, H. Wulff, and a Captain Schebling. These leaves are partially excised, and some have horizontal slices across them. There are about 50 subsequent pages of entries written from the other direction in German by Wulff, covering the dates April 29 to November 11, 1849. Wulff documents the Elisabeth Starbuck's journey from the Tasman Sea north and east, and then southwest to Hobart, Tasmania. Alongside the entry for June 10, 1849, Wulff has affixed a print on green paper depicting Shakespeare's Cliff, Dover. Additionally, alongside the March 27 entry, there is a typescript note with a partial English translation of one of Wulff's entries. At September 19-24, there is a handwritten translation by Fred Buenzle on yellow paper. The final pages include a log of whales raised and other ships the Elisabeth Starbuck encountered, as well as some solar and lunar observations.

Book Description
This is the story of my Great Grandfather's voyage on a whaling ship from New Bedford to the North Pacific and back from 1842 to 1845. The official log of that voyage of the Nimrod is missing so this the only log available. He kept a running daily log throughout the voyage. Some days little happened and others were full of action and danger. Hawaii was the place that they returned to in order to replenish their supplies, load wood to make barrels, repair the whale boats and the ship, and get fresh food and water. At one point when his boat lowered for a whale, after a long chase out of visual contact with the ship, the whale dived and came up under the whale boat, crushing it and dumping the crew into the sea. Graham was one of two survivors but was on the verge of letting go and sinking when the ship finely rescued them. I have added some information on terms that were used on the whale ships, the tools of the trade, a bit about the types of ships that were used and the types of whales that they sought, as well as several surviving letters that were written to Graham while he was on that voyage.

Book Description
From the author of Mayflower, Valiant Ambition, and In the Hurricane's Eye--the riveting bestseller tells the story of the true events that inspired Melville's Moby-Dick. Winner of the National Book Award, Nathaniel Philbrick's book is a fantastic saga of survival and adventure, steeped in the lore of whaling, with deep resonance in American literature and history. In 1820, the whaleship Essex was rammed and sunk by an angry sperm whale, leaving the desperate crew to drift for more than ninety days in three tiny boats. Nathaniel Philbrick uses little-known documents and vivid details about the Nantucket whaling tradition to reveal the chilling facts of this infamous maritime disaster. In the Heart of the Sea, recently adapted into a major feature film starring Chris Hemsworth, is a book for the ages.
