Book Description
Excerpt from A Hundred Voices: And Other Poems From the Second Part of "Life Immovable" Be a new matchless song for a new Greece. To every place he mentions in these lines he has given the modern and living name instead of the classical one, which for false classicists and purists is equivalent to treason, as is the stubbornness with which the adherents of the vernacular prefer to learn from the lips Of igno rant Old peasant women rather than from the books of the wise. On this matter, Palamas is plain spoken. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Conversing Identities: Encounters Between British, Irish and Greek Poetry, 1922-1952 presents a panorama of cultures brought in dialogue through travel, immigration and translation set against the insularity imposed by war and the hegemony of the national centre in the period 1922-1952. Each chapter tells a story within a specific time and space that connected the challenges and fissures experienced in two cultures with the goal to explore how the post-1922 accentuated mobility across frontiers found an appropriate expression in the work of the poets under consideration. Either influenced by their actual travel to Britain or Greece or divided in their various allegiances and reactions to national or imperial sovereignty, the poets examined explored the possibilities of a metaphorical diasporic sense of belonging within the multicultural metropolis and created personae to indicate the tension at the contact of the old and the new, the hypocritical parody of mixed breeds and the need for modern heroes to avoid national or gendered stereotypes. The main coordinates were the national voices of W.B. Yeats and Kostes Palamas, T.S. Eliot’s multilingual outlook as an Anglo-American métoikos, C.P. Cavafy’s view as a Greek of the diaspora, displaced William Plomer’s portrayal of 1930s Athens, Demetrios Capetanakis’ journey to the British metropolis, John Lehmann’s antithetical journey eastward, as well as Louis MacNeice’s complex loyalties to a national identity and sense of belonging as an Irish classicist, translator and traveller.

Not illustrated. 1921 edition. Excerpt: ... Spectator," March, 1901. The Muse Something great and something beautiful, Something from beyond and far away Reaches here in waves of lightning flashes, Seeking for itself the crown of song. Bard, awake; take from the forest's trembling, Mingle with the storm-cloud's threatful anger, And remember the old song of Pindar: "I am not a maker of stone statues; Maker of songs am I " The Poet Among the gardens of Hesperides, I loved the fruit that bent the topmost bough Of a gold apple tree; Awake me not. And with my harp of gold and ivory, I try to make a captive of the sound That holds all men in thrall; And with my song To tame the savage dragon guard. Thk Muse Awake; you are no maker of stone statues; Awake; maker of songs you are; And in your song, my chosen one, There are all things of flesh and spirit From dreams of lilies To thirsts of nations; Awake and see The Poet I see; above me spreads a sky Like a faint smile on Sirens' lips; And at my feet--O futile longings--The cursed country of the Greeks The corsair Time Has buried in abysmal depths Alive this matchless queen of deed and thought. And now, blow after blow, the searching pick Of the wise antiquarian unearths The buried bones Of a huge broken skeleton; A wilderness about; and blasphemies Of shouting mobs tear through the sacred air; Languid and idle people live a life Of indolence. Glory, alas is not a thing of ruins; Glory is only the great fir that stands A fearless challenge to the thunderbolt; And glory is the great tree that can match Stout branches with the wings of birds And casts a shadow dripping with cool dew On ruddy sun-tanned laborers. And glory is the tree that falls When the wood-cutter strikes it with his axe, And falls With all the violence of a wounded...
