Book Description
Had People magazine been around during the Civil War and after, Kate Chase would have made its “Most Beautiful” and “Most Intriguing” lists every year. Kate Chase, the charismatic daughter of Abraham Lincoln's treasury secretary, enjoyed unprecedented political power for a woman. As her widowed father's hostess, she set up a rival “court” against Mary Lincoln in hopes of making her father president and herself his First Lady. To facilitate that goal, she married one of the richest men in the country, the handsome “boy governor” of Rhode Island, in the social event of the Civil War. But when William Sprague turned out to be less of a prince as a husband, she found comfort in the arms of a powerful married senator. The ensuing scandal ended her virtual royalty, leaving her a social outcast who died in poverty. Yet in her final years she would find both greater authenticity and the inner peace that had always eluded her. Set against the seductive allure of the Civil War and Gilded Age, Kate Chase Sprague's dramatic story is one of ambition and tragedy involving some of the most famous personalities in American history. In this beautifully written and meticulously researched biography, drawing on much unpublished material, John Oller captures the tumultuous and passionate life of a woman who was a century ahead of her time.

Book Description
The Monadnock Region has been referred to as New Hampshire's "forgotten corner." It is a quiet region known for its historic New England villages and beautiful natural landscape. Overlooked tales from the past prove that this has not always been a quiet place, however. Mark Twain, Amelia Earhart, robber baron Jubilee Jim Fisk, infamous actress May Yohe, and miser Hetty Green, the richest woman in the United States, all spent time in the quiet corner. Noteworthy inventors, outspoken women, military heroes, nationally prominent businessmen, and dastardly criminals all called the region home. Local historian and author Alan F. Rumrill has compiled stories that reveal a region defined by its Yankee character - and filled with Yankee characters.

Book Description
Excerpt from A History of the Town of Keene: From 1732, When the Township Was Granted by Massachusetts, to 1874, When It Became a City Gen. Simon Goodell Griffin died on January 14, 1902. On June 19, 1902, the supervisory committee transmitted to the city councils the manuscript of the History of the Town of Keene as written by General Griffin, with photo graphs, maps and other subjects for illustration, and sug gested the appointment of a new committee to attend to the publication and sale of the history, with power to make minor alterations and any additions thereto it thought advisable. AS one of such additions the annals of the city of Keene, from the incorporation of the city to the date of publication, were suggested. On the same date Bertram Ellis, Wallace L. Mason and Frank H. Whit comb were appointed a committee for the above named purposes and the councils appropriated the unexpended balance for contingent expenses. Bertram Ellis resigned and the other members of the committee advertised for bids and made a contract with the Sentinel Printing Company for the publication of the history, on October 27, 1903.
