From 'A History of the Mishnaic Law of Appointed Times, Part 1' This volume introduces the sources of Judaism in late antiquity to scholars in adjacent fields, such as the study of the Old and New Testaments, Ancient History, the ancient Near East, and the history of religion. In two volumes, leading American, Israeli, and European specialists in the history, literature, theology, and archaeology of Judaism offer factual answers to the two questions that the study of any religion in ancient times must raise. The first is, what are the sources -- written and in material culture -- that inform us about that religion? The second is, how have we to understand those sources in reconstructing the history of various Judaic systems in antiquity. The chapters set forth in simple statements, intelligible to non-specialists, the facts which the sources provide. Because of the nature of the subject and acute interest in it, the specialists also raise some questions particular to the study of Judaism, dealing with its historical relationship with nascent Christianity in New Testament times. The work forms the starting point for the study of all the principal questions concerning Judaism in late antiquity and sets forth the most current, critical results of scholarship.

Jewish Identity in Early Rabbinic Writings is more than a question of legal status: it is the experience of being Jewish or of 'Jewishness' in all its social and cultural dimensions. This work describes this experience as it emerges in Talmudic and Midrashic sources. Besides the question of “who is a Jew?”, topics include the contrast between Israel and the non-Jews, the physical embodiment of Jewish identity, the 'boundaries' of Israel and resistance to assimilation. Jewish identity, it is argued, hinges essentially on the Divine commandments (mitzvot) and on Israel's perceived proximity with the Divine. Sir William Mitchell Ramsay was a British archaeologist and New Testament scholar. Initially, he was one of the biggest Bible critics of his day. However, after decades of research, by his death in 1939, he had become the foremost authority of his day on the history of Asia Minor and a leading scholar in the study of the New Testament, as well as the advocate for the trustworthiness of the New Testament. There were many Bible critics of the early 19th century like there are today, who questioned Luke’s accuracy as a historian. Furthermore, they maintained that the history in Acts was merely invented in the middle of the second century A.D. The author of this book, the British archaeologist and Bible scholar Sir William Mitchell Ramsay was one who believed these things. But after a lengthy investigation of the names and places mentioned by Luke, he declared: “It was gradually borne in upon me that in various details the narrative showed marvelous truth.” This classic defense of the book of Acts was, again, written by a scholar whose initial motivation was to disprove Luke's authorship. After many years of research into the internal evidence of Luke’s books, he became one of the greatest advocates for the authenticity and accuracy of Luke's accounts. We have taken some liberties with Ramsay’s book in that we tweaked the title. We updated his archaic English and changed the UK English to US English. We have added many Bible background chapters and an appendix that we now consider this book a 12th edition. I am most certain that Ramsay would not mind the enhancements that we have made that have made a great book and even better book that can grow the faith of its readers.

The Miriam Tradition works from the premise that religious values form in and through movement, with ritual and dance developing patterns for enacting those values. Cia Sautter considers the case of Sephardic Jewish women who, following in the tradition of Miriam the prophet, performed dance and music for Jewish celebrations and special occasions. She uses rabbinic and feminist understandings of the Torah to argue that these women, called tanyaderas, "taught" Jewish values by leading appropriate behavior for major life events. Sautter considers the religious values that are in music and dance performed by tanyaderas and examines them in conjunction with written and visual records and evidence from dance and music traditions. Explaining the symbolic gestures and motions encoded in dances, Sautter shows how rituals display deeply held values that are best expressed through the body. The book argues that the activities of women in other religions might also be examined for their embodiment and display of important values, bringing forgotten groups of women back into the historical record as important community leaders
