Book Description
Excerpt from A History of the Jews in Rome: B. C. 160 A. D. 604 I think this book will not be found dull and lifeless, for while seeking, viewing in different lights, and blending the materials of which it is composed, I have felt myself carried back to my own youthful days. History was then my favourite study, which I ardently pursued, guided by a dear mother - the Reader to our happy home circle. Then I learned to love books suitable for reading in the family; consequently that is the character I wish to give to every one of my own literary productions. With regard to this Compilation, being unacquainted with the dead languages, I could not draw from original Greek and Latin sources. I could but make use of what has been given to the world by laborious students who have accomplished successful literary work, I could but select from among the vast multitude of events and facts, and the conflicting ideas which have resulted from thcm through many generations of men, such as most forcibly struck out sparks of thought from my own mind, and suited my purpose.
