Most of his earlier descen- dants were tobacco planters with large plantations and slaves as the major source of labor. Many descendants remained in Virginia while others began migrating southward to the Carolinas, Tennessee, Kentuc- ky, Georgia, Mississippi, Florida, California and elsewhere.
