A History of English Furniture: The age of satinwood
Author: Percy Macquoid

ISBN:
Category : Furniture
Languages : en
Pages : 336
Book Description
In the arrangement of this work, it will be found that the subject has been divided into four periods. The first, dating from 1500 to 1660, comprising furniture that can be attributed to the Renaissance and its evolution from the Gothic, may be termed 'The age of oak'. The second, from 1660 to 1720, where the change is varied by the Restoration and Dutch influence, followed by a distinctly assertive English spirit, may be called 'The age of walnut'. The third period, where the introduction from France of fesh ideas in design clearly marked another change, lasting from 1720 to 1770, which we call 'The age of mahogany'; and the fourth, from 1770 to 1820, inspired by an affectation for all things classical, combined with a curiously unbalanced taste, can best be described as 'The composite age.' -- Preface, v.1.

Mahogany
Author: Jennifer L. Anderson
Publisher: Harvard University Press

Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 421
Book Description
Colonial Americans were enamored with the rich colors and silky surface of mahogany. As this exotic wood became fashionable, demand for it set in motion a dark, hidden story of human and environmental exploitation. Anderson traces the path from source to sale, revealing how prosperity and desire shaped not just people’s lives but the natural world.

A Cultural History of Furniture in the Age of Enlightenment
Author: Sylvain Cordier

ISBN: 1350280100
Category : Design

Pages : 321
Book Description
The 18th century saw the height of court culture in Europe as well as the beginnings of its demise with conflicts such as the American and French Revolutions. The Scientific Revolution, which had begun in the preceding centuries, also ushered in a new intellectual era which advocated the use of reason to effect change in government and to advance progress in society. For furniture, this meant ever-higher standards of luxury in the designs, techniques and materials utilized for the best pieces, and more structure and specialization in the furniture-making process itself. Furniture also came into its own during this period as a collectable work of art on its own merits. Drawing upon a wealth of visual and textual sources, this volume presents essays that examine key characteristics of the furniture of the period on the themes of Design and Motifs; Makers, Making, and Materials; Types and Uses; The Domestic Setting; The Public Setting; Exhibition and Display; Furniture and Architecture; Visual Representations; and Verbal Representations.
