" John D. Imboden is an important but often overlooked figure in Civil War history. With only limited militia training, the Virginia lawyer and politician rose to the rank of brigadier general in the Confederate Army and commanded the Shenandoah Valley District, which had been created for Stonewall Jackson. Imboden organized and led the Staunton Artillery in the capture of the U.S. arsenal at Harper’s Ferry. He participated in the First Battle of Bull Run/Manassas and organized a cavalry command that fought alongside Stonewall Jackson in his Shenandoah Valley Campaign. The Jones/Imboden Raid into West Virginia cut the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and ravaged the Kanawha Valley petroleum fields. Imboden covered the Confederate withdrawal from Gettysburg and later led cavalry accompanying Jubal Early in his operations against Philip Sheridan in Sheridan’s Shenandoah Valley Campaign. Imboden completed his war service in command of Confederate prisons in Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi. Spencer C. Tucker fully examines the life of this Confederate cavalry commander, including analysis of Imboden’s own post-war writing, and explores overlooked facets of his life, such as his involvement in the Confederate prison system, his later efforts to restore the economic life of his home state of Virginia by developing its natural resources, and his founding of the city of Damascus, which he hoped to make into a new iron and steel center. Spencer C. Tucker, John Biggs Professor of Military History at the Virginia Military Institute, is the author of Vietnam and the author or editor of several other books on military and naval history. This book is about a barber, Shihab al-Din Ahmad Ibn Budayr, who shaved and coiffed, and probably circumcised and healed, in Damascus in the 18th century. The barber may have been a "nobody," but he wrote a history book, a record of the events that took place in his city during his lifetime. Dana Sajdi investigates the significance of this book, and in examining the life and work of Ibn Budayr, uncovers the emergence of a larger trend of history writing by unusual authors—people outside the learned establishment—and a new phenomenon: nouveau literacy. The Barber of Damascus offers the first full-length microhistory of an individual commoner in Ottoman and Islamic history. Contributing to Ottoman popular history, Arabic historiography, and the little-studied cultural history of the 18th century Levant, the volume also examines the reception of the barber's book a century later to explore connections between the 18th and the late 19th centuries and illuminates new paths leading to the Nahda, the Arab Renaissance.

In 1904, when the Hassinger brothers ¿ Luther (L. C.), Will, and John ¿ came from the northwestern Pennsylvania county of Forest to the southwestern Virginia county of Washington with the idea of continuing their father¿s lumber business, they liked what they saw: thousands of acres of virgin forest. Two years later, they built a sawmill in Washington County and a company town to support its workers. L. C.¿s mother, Letisha, named the town Konnarock. In less than ten years, the Hassinger Lumber Company of Konnarock, Virginia, had employed over 400 workers, laid down over 75 miles of railroad track (they named their railroad the White Top Railway), built 20 logging camps, and sawed almost 60,000 board feet of lumber per day at its mill. Not only did the Hassinger Lumber Company cut timber in Washington County, Virginia, they also did extensive timbering in neighboring Ashe County, North Carolina, and also sawed timber cut in Watauga County, North Carolina, when the Deep Gap Tie and Lumber Company, located in the Watauga County village of Deep Gap, bought the Hassinger Lumber Company¿s Shay locomotive No. 3, sending its logs to the Hassinger sawmill in Konnarock, 50 miles away. By the time the blades went silent on Christmas Eve, 1928, almost 400 million board feet of the area¿s best wood had passed through the Hassinger Lumber Company¿s sawmill. This book contains the story of the Hassinger Lumber Company and its company town, Konnarock, as well as information about the Beaver Dam Railroad, the Laurel Railway (both located in the northeastern Tennessee county of Johnson), the Virginia¿Carolina Railway (the ¿Virginia Creeper¿), the logging of the Pond Mountain area of Ashe County, North Carolina, by the Damascus Lumber Company, and the Hassinger Lumber Company¿s logging operations in the Elkland (present-day Todd) area of Ashe County.
