These, whether fragments or consecutive records, are not appreciated in the time of their happening, but later are invaluable. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of the Seventh Day Baptists: In Including the Woodbridgetown and Salemville Churches in Pennsylvania and the Shrewsbury Church in New Jersey This volume is the result of an invitation to prepare a historical paper relating to the Seventh Day Baptist South-Eastern Association, for the meeting held at Ashaway, Rhode Island, in August, 1902, in commemoration of the organisation of the Seventh Day Baptist General Conference one hundred years before. For four years, all the time which could be spared from a very busy life, has been devoted to its preparation. My first plan was to write a paper which I hoped could be completed in about two weeks. As soon as I began to examine what had been published relating to the subject, however, I found that I should be obliged to consult the original records. As a result, I soon altered my plans, and began the preparation of a more exhaustive treatise, designed to be a classified epitome of all existing records relating to Seventh Day Baptists in Western Virginia, including the Shrewsbury Church of Monmouth County, New Jersey, and the Woodbridgetown Church of Fayette County, Pennsylvaia, and the Salemville Church of Bedford County, Pennsylvania; in short, to supply the material needed for some future historian to write a narrative of these people in story form, occupying about two-fifths the space of this book. At one time I contemplated such a narrative as a suitable introduction to the present work, which long ago grew to proportions such as make that impracticable. Book Description
Excerpt from Historical Sketch of the Pittsgrove Baptist Church: Daretown, Salem County, New Jersey Those British Colonials were staunch and true to their convictions, and supported the cause of American freedom with an heroic, self - sacrificing devotion only equalled by their love of soul liberty and the maintenance of those distinctive Gospel truths of One Faith, One Lord, One Baptism. The Pittsgrove Baptist Church life antedates the Revolutionary days, and is a standing witness of the changed conditions so splendidly effected by our forefathers in 17 7 6. The earmarks of the Colonial era are found in the church records, which have been well preserved, notwithstanding the. Fact that Baptist church clerks, as a rule, give so little attention to preserving the records and minutes of our local churches. The splendid re cord of marriages, conversions, baptisms, and the references to those who fell on sleep are as unique as they are authentic and well recorded. The discipline of the church evidently was main tained, the failures and delinquencies of the mem bers were given attention, and commendation ex pressed for the faithful. Should the reader feel that the author uncovers unnecessarily the past doings of the authorities. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
