Book Description
Designed to capture a snapshot in history, this report attempts to portray settlement within a small segment of northern Fayette County, Texas. Background data including natural environment studies, economic and social patterns through time, and modern land use patterns give focus to the historical perspective. The Cultural Resource staff of the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) seeks to explore and capture the evolution of landscapes under its stewardship as mandated by law and common sense. This is the fourth in a series of cultural resource management reports prepared by LCRA that incorporates the first-hand knowledge of local informants to tell accurate stories of LCRA lands. To properly understand the evolving landscape, a sketch of the people and surrounding communities is presented. Waldeck, Nechanitz and Walhalla are a few among many small communities now struggling to survive as place names. Archaeological and historical research, augmented by oral histories, is presented to breathe fresh life into an increasingly depopulated country. The focus of this study is the Cooper Farm, currently a 180-acre tract of land on an uplands remnant prairie between the drainage of Cummins and Shaw creeks just west of Round Top and south of Ledbetter, Texas. Recorded as archaeological site 41 FY 398, the property was but one of hundreds reported in 1991 by the University of Texas during a sweeping survey of a proposed lignite mining operation for LCRA. Cooper Farm, destined to become the operational center for the mine, was converted to a natural science laboratory by LCRA when economics shifted and the mining proposal was abandoned. The reintroduction of native wildlife, coupled with food plots, prairie restoration, and replacement woodlands, has been the impetus for a cooperative wildlife venture now spreading to other counties.
