Bulletin of the National Association of Wool Manufacturers, Vol. 37
Author: National Association of W Manufacturers
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781331657545
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 532
Book Description
Excerpt from Bulletin of the National Association of Wool Manufacturers, Vol. 37: 1907 In 1845 Daniel Saunders, aided by Boston men who furnished the money to carry on his undertaking, began the construction of an immense dam and a series of canals at Lawrence. With clear vision he saw what the future held in store for that section of the Commonwealth, possessing as it does the Spicket and the Merrimac Rivers. The first mill was built in 1846; the town was incorporated in 1847, and it became a city March 21, 1853. Though but sixty years old and but twenty-six miles distant from Boston, Lawrence has within its limits a population exceeding 70,000, and some of the greatest of the State's industries, especially in the textile branch. Within the past year one of the largest worsted mills in the country has been erected there, and very considerable additions have been made to another of its mills. To make a record of this expansion we print in the pages of the Bulletin, and preserve for future students of the textile industry of the country, the many interesting but fugitive facts concerning these great enterprises, the Arlington Mills and the Wood Worsted Mill. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work.
