Eating Disorders and Marital Relationships
Author: Jan Norre
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134752121
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 219
Book Description
Anorexia and bulimia are on the increase in the Western world and the disease is now recognised to no longer be only a problem for teenage girls, but older women as well. Most older women either do now or did previously live with a partner and much attention has been paid to these relationships in devising therapeutic regimes. Eating Disorders and Marital Relationships takes a critical look at the evidence behind the assumption of psychiatric illness in the patients and their partners and comes up with some surprising results. Van den Broucke, Vandereycken and Norre carefully describe both the theoretical and practical implications of their work, making this book important reading for both practitioner and researcher.

Family, Culture, and Self in the Development of Eating Disorders
Author: Susan Haworth-Hoeppner
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 131727413X
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 257
Book Description
This book takes a unique approach to the examination of the eating disorder, anorexia nervosa (and bulimia). White, middle-class, heterosexual women share their insights into the emergence of their illnesses through detailed interviews that consider perceptions of the role of family, the influence of cultural messages regarding thinness and beauty, the agency these women exert in the use of weight control to cope with life’s stressors, the meaning they attach to their eating disorders and how these issues together perpetuate their disease. The book uses a Symbolic Interactionist framework and a grounded theory approach to examine the narratives which emerge from these women’s stories. Themes of family, culture, and self arise in their narratives; these form the theoretical underpinnings for this book, and combine to shape the comprehensive model of eating disorders that emerges from this study. Haworth-Hoeppner’s book will appeal to researchers and advanced students of sociology, women’s studies, family studies, social psychology, and gender studies.

Couples' Process of Becoming Change Agents in Caring for Daughters Living with Eating Disorders
Author: Melissa Kemp
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Couples
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
While a growing body of literature describes the experiences of parents, there is little known about couples’ relationships while supporting their daughters living with eating disorders. In this study, we explored five couple relationships using the grounded theory method. A substantive theory of couples becoming change agents emerged that explains diverse adjustments in couples’ relationships while supporting their ill daughters. As couples become change agents, they rely on the pathways of reflecting, coping, and strengthening resilience to move through stages of surviving the initial period, juggling responsibilities, and expanding supportive roles. At each stage, couples use coping strategies and reflect on the effectiveness of their actions as individuals and as couples, which strengthens their resilience and promotes change for their ill daughters. They later expand their support by becoming change agents within their families and communities. Advocacy by couples points to the need for further education and resources to support couples in caring for children experiencing eating disorders. Keywords: couples, relationships, support, eating disorders, reflection, coping, resilience, grounded theory
