Book Description
A critical review of two papers in the subject of the Theory of Games by W.H. Brock of S.R.I. is provided. The framework of comparison employs the Hempel concept of a formal model (qua theory) to construct a partial order on deductive explanans - explandum schemata. In addition, a comparison is made between the works in question and existing theory on the subject. (Author).

Game Theory, Social Choice and Ethics
Author: H. Brock
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400995326
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 195
Book Description
There are problems to whose solution I would attach an infinitely greater import ancf! than to those of mathematics, for example touching ethics, or our relation to God, or conceming our destiny and our future; but their solution lies wholly beyond us and completely outside the province 0 f science. J. F. C. Gauss For a1l his prescience in matters physical and mathematieal, the great Gauss apparently did not foresee one development peculiar to OUT own time. The development I have in mind is the use of mathematical reasoning - in partieu lar the axiomatic method - to explicate alternative concepts of rationality and morality. The present bipartite collection of essays (Vol. 11, Nos. 2 and 3 of this journal) is entitled 'Game Theory, Social Choiee, and Ethics'. The eight papers represent state-of-the-art research in formal moral theory. Their intended aim is to demonstrate how the methods of game theory, decision theory, and axiomatic social choice theory can help to illuminate ethical questions central not only to moral theory, but also to normative public policy analysis. Before discussion of the contents of the papers, it should prove helpful to recall a number of pioneering papers that appeared during the decade of the 1950s. These papers contained aseries of mathematical and conceptual break through which laid the basis for much of today's research in formal moral theory. The papers deal with two somewhat distinct topics: the concept of individual and collective rationality, and the concept of social justiee.

Game Theory, Decision Theory, and Social Choice Theory in the Context of a New Theory of Equity
Author:
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 44
Book Description
Some of thee interrelationships between game theory, axiomatic social choice theory, and ethics are set forth in the context of a new theory of equity. One of the principal functions of the new theory is to explicate alternative intuitive concepts of equity such as 'To Each According to His Needs, ' and 'To Each According to His Contribution.' Game theoretic methods are used not only to provide an unambiguous, analytical characterization of these (and other) concepts, but also to integrate the various concepts within a single, coherent account of equity. In Section II, the reader is furnished with an overview of the Basic structure of the theory. In Section III, the subtheory of distribution according to relative needs is developed. Here attention is drawn to the mathematical equivalence of the ethical model developed in this theory with the Nash-Harsanyi theory of pure n-person bargaining games and with the Kaneko-Nakamura version of axiomatic social choice theory. In Section IV, the subtheory of distribution according to relative contribution is discussed. And Section V presents an informal characterization of a two-stage game, which when played, will realize 'full distributive justice' as understood in the new theory.

The Game of Justice
Author: Ruth Lane
Publisher: State University of New York Press
ISBN: 0791480232
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 218
Book Description
The Game of Justice argues that justice is politics, that politics is something close to ordinary people and not located in an abstract and distant institution known as the State, and that the concept of the game provides a new way to appreciate the possibilities of creating justice. Justice, as a game, is played in a challenging environment that makes serious demands on the participants, in terms of self-knowledge and individual self-government, and also in terms of understanding social behavior. What the term game provides is a radical opening of all established institutions: the status quo is neither absolute nor inevitable, but is the result of past political controversy, a result created by the winners to express their victory. At the same time, the game of justice, like all games, is played over and over again, with winners and losers changing places over time. This serves as encouragement to past losers and provides a cautionary reminder to past winners.
