Book Description
This book has been percolating in my subconscious for more than 70 years. It may have mellowed a little over the years, but has lost little of its relevance or bite. As one of the premiere procrastinators of this and over half of the last century, I put it off as long as I could but finally acquiesced and the final product is now in your hands. If not for political correctness, the book would be longer and possibly less relative. Jokes are multi-dimensional. For everyone they delight, they piss somebody off. It’s a zero-sum game and we each identify with one side or the other. I found myself single again about 4 years ago, and moved half way across the state. One of the main advantages of a major move is that a brand new audience is right at hand. Over the last few years, quite a few of my new acquaintances have been telling me that I should write a joke book, and here it is.

Book Description
Playfulness has an important role in ensuring that life continues to be enjoyable and meaningful after a person is diagnosed with dementia. This positive and uplifting book sets out to establish playfulness as an essential component of dementia care, and will be a key text in changing attitudes and offering practical suggestions for new and valuable ways of interacting and being with people with the condition. The author explains what is meant by playfulness within this context, and why it is so important for people with dementia, including as a way of maintaining meaningful relationships and a sense of personhood, as a way of retaining control and as a way into lateral thinking. He provides a wealth of practical suggestions for bringing activities with an element of playfulness into day-to-day dementia care, illustrating these with photographs and many examples drawn from his own extensive experience and from people with dementia, their families and professional caregivers. The importance of spontaneity and of being with the person with dementia in the present moment is emphasized, and the author encourages the reader to develop a more playful mindset, giving them the confidence to engage with different kinds of emotions and follow where playfulness leads, even if a sense of uncertainty is generated. The ethical dimensions of playfulness in dementia care are also covered, including important boundaries to be observed and guidance on dealing with difficult situations. Offering a fresh and original perspective that will illuminate our interactions with people with dementia, this is essential reading for professional care staff, activity coordinators, therapists, nurses, people with dementia and their families and caregivers, and anyone else concerned with the wellbeing of those with the condition.

Book Description
The NFL insists players know they're playing a dangerous game, but players never see the deteriorated mental capacities of their former heroes. Throwaway Players is former Tampa Bay Buccaneers president Gay Culverhouse’s story of the broken bodies and lost souls of the men who have left the locker room and what remains after the cheering subsides. Focused on making money rather than the well-being of their players, this is the dark side of football the NFL doesn't want fans to see. Additionally, high schools, colleges, and independent sports organizations have little oversight when choosing player’s equipment. This breeds a new generation of kids suffering from multiple concussions and damaged lives. Throwaway Players offers guidance to parents navigating the world of competitive sports as well as advocacy and resources for athletes often left in the dark about appropriate procedures for treating injuries, especially head traumas. Throwaway Players is essential reading for any parent, athlete, and sports fan. Gay Culverhouse testified before Congress on football head injuries and successfully changed the policy of including an independent neurologist on the sidelines of every NFL game. Gay's work with former players has appeared in The New York Times, Sarasota Herald Tribune, St. Petersburg Times, The Tampa Tribune, Time magazine, and many more. She has appeared on several radio shows, including PBS and ESPN, and is featured in three documentaries that are in post-production (with CNN, ESPN, and an independent filmmaker). In November 2009 Gay formed The Gay Culverhouse Players’ Outreach Program, Inc., a nonprofit organization to further the work nationally for retired players.

'A fine book' The Sunday Times 'Powerful' Guardian 'Wonderful' The Telegraph 'Moving, funny, warm' Mail on Sunday 'Brave, compassionate, tender and honest' Metro 'This book began as an attempt to hold on to my witty, storytelling mother with the one thing I had to hand. Words. Then, as the enormity of the social crisis my family was part of began to dawn, I wrote with the thought that other forgotten lives might be nudged into the light along with hers. Dementia is one of the greatest social, medical, economic, scientific, philosophical and moral challenges of our times. I am a reporter. It became the biggest story of my life.' Sally Magnusson Sad and funny, wise and honest, Where Memories Go is a deeply intimate account of insidious losses and unexpected joys in the terrible face of dementia, and a call to arms that challenges us all to think differently about how we care for our loved ones when they need us most. Regarded as one of the finest journalists of her generation, Mamie Baird Magnusson's whole life was a celebration of words - words that she fought to retain in the grip of a disease which is fast becoming the scourge of the 21st century. Married to writer and broadcaster Magnus Magnusson, they had five children of whom Sally is the eldest. As well as chronicling the anguish, the frustrations and the unexpected laughs and joys that she and her sisters experienced while accompanying their beloved mother on the long dementia road for eight years until her death in 2012, Sally Magnusson seeks understanding from a range of experts and asks penetrating questions about how we treat older people, how we can face one of the greatest social, medical, economic and moral challenges of our times, and what it means to be human.

Book Description
It is painfully difficult to watch a loved one decline as dementia ravages their mind, destroying memories, rational thinking, and judgment. In her touching memoir, I Will Never Forget, Elaine Pereira shares the heartbreaking and humorous story of her mother’s incredible journey through dementia. Pereira begins with entertaining glimpses into her own childhood and feisty teenage years, demonstrating her mother’s strength of character. Years later, as Betty Ward started to exhibit bizarre behaviors and paranoia, Pereira was mystified by her mom’s amazing ability to mask the truth. Not until a revealing incident over an innocuous drapery rod did Pereira recognize the extent of her mother’s Alzheimer’s. As their roles shifted and a new paradigm emerged, Pereira transformed into a caregiver blindly navigating dementia’s unpredictable haze. But before Betty’s passing, she orchestrated a stunning rally to control her own destiny via a masterful, Houdini-like escape. I Will Never Forget is a powerful heartwarming story that helps others know that they are not alone in their journey. “Poignant, shocking, and honest … far more than just words on paper. If you or someone you know is living through the hell of dementia, you need this book!” —Ionia Martin, developer of Readful Things Reviews and Alzheimer’s caregiver
