Book Description
The Extraordinary Life of a Revolutionary Journalist Radical journalist Claud Cockburn fought successfully against the political and media establishment, writing for publications as varied as The Times and Private Eye. To Graham Greene, he was the greatest journalist of the twentieth century. Born in China in 1904 and educated alongside Evelyn Waugh, Cockburn launched into a stellar career as a Times correspondent, first in Berlin, then New York, interviewing Al Capone in Chicago, and finally Washington. He resigned in 1932 to start The Week, an anti-Nazi and anti-establishment newsletter with an influence out of all proportion to its circulation. British officials were horrified by the scoops he published. These included stories on the political influence of German appeasers – the Cliveden Set – in the British elite and the previously suppressed news of Edward VIII’s abdication. Cockburn wrote dispatches while fighting in the Spanish Civil War. In Spain, he helped W. H. Auden and clashed with George Orwell. Claud’s private life, too, was eventful. He was married three times, once to Jean Ross, the model for Christopher Isherwood’s Sally Bowles. Patrick Cockburn, himself an international journalist, chronicles his father Claud’s lifelong dedication to a guerrilla campaign against the powerful on behalf of the powerless. It is a biography for today’s age, in which journalism is frequently suppressed, overshadowed, undervalued, and corrupted

Book Description
THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A LEGENDARY NEWSPAPERMAN WHO IS NAMED CLAUD COCKBURN (pronounced Coburn) and who has been called many things (most of the pronounced abusively) by well-known personages all over the world for a quarter of a century. For some years before World War II he was the diplomatic correspondent of the (London) “Daily Worker.” For even more years he was a foreign correspondent of “The Times” (also of London). He founded and wrote “The Week,” a mimeographed anti-Fascist periodical which he says “was unquestionably the nastiest-looking bit of work that ever dropped onto a breakfast table.” It started with seven subscribers and in two years numbered among its readers most of the diplomats of Europe, many bankers and senators, Charlie Chaplin, King Edward VIII and the Nizam of Hyderabad. Senator Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin once listed him as one of the 269 most dangerous Reds alive. In the same week, a Czech Communist named Otto Katz was hanged in Prague after confessing that he had been recruited to the cause of anti-Communism by Colonel Cockburn of the British Intelligence Service. Here is what the man himself says about how funny, how tragic and how fascinating he found life in London, Berlin, New York and Washington in the years between two world wars. Some of these stories have appeared in “Punch,” but this is a complete text of what the author has so far written down about himself and his legend. It is full of wit, and irreverence, and surprising joyfulness. It is a little like the glass of champagne the author learned to appreciate in “the little moment which remains between the crisis and the catastrophe.”

Book Description
Music, myth, and magic mix—in this two-volume fantasy masterpiece by a New York Times–bestselling author that is a “joy to read” (Publishers Weekly). Hugo and Nebula Award–winning author Greg Bear explores the power of music to open a portal between worlds in this pair of brilliantly imagined fantasy novels. The Infinity Concerto: Following the instructions of a virtuoso composer—whose controversial Concerto Opus 45 is actually a song of power—young poet Michael Perrin passes through a gateway between Earth and the Realm of the Sidhedark, where faeries reign by rule of magic, and Michael’s epic journey begins . . . The Serpent Mage: After five years trapped in the Realm of the Sidhedark, Michael has returned home to Los Angeles. But the song of power has weakened the veil between the human and fairie worlds, and the Sidhe have followed him to the other side . . .
