Book Description
The stern look on the cover of this book should not fool you. David Dixon Porter was one of the wittiest, most erudite men to have served in the American Civil War and once you've read his memoirs, you won't miss the twinkle in those eyes. What most Americans know about the Civil War centers around Union and Confederate land campaigns. But without the U.S. Navy, the absolutely essential blockade of southern ports could not have prevented the rebels from trading on a large scale. Even less known is the crucial role the Navy played in many of the land campaigns, including the siege of Vicksburg and operations on the James River among many others. David Porter was in the center of this action, collaborating closely with Ulysses S. Grant and William T. Sherman. Porter was the U.S. Navy's second admiral, after his adopted brother David Farragut. This book is full of some of the most interesting anecdotes and the most important players in the American Civil War. Porter writes with great humor and describes stories you won't read in any other Civil War memoir. During Abraham Lincoln's two week visit to City Point, shortly before his assassination, Porter was by his side nearly all the time. His observations of the great man and his reminiscences of their conversations are unique in Civil War literature. For the first time, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. Book Description
One of the legendary figures of the frontier U.S. Army and the Indian Wars, Sandy Forsyth is unknown to most Americans. This volume contains his exciting account of the Battle of Beecher Island in September, 1868. Forsyth commanded a tiny force pinned down on a sand bar in the Republican River for nine days against hundreds of Cheyenne warriors led by Roman Nose. Forsyth was badly wounded but stayed in command as men and horses fell around him. Earlier in his career, he had been an aide-de-camp to Major-General Phil Sheridan during the Civil War. He rode with Sheridan on his famous nighttime ride from Winchester to avert catastrophe at the Battle of Cedar Creek. That story is here, as well as Forsyth's memory of his presence at the surrender of Robert E. Lee to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Courthouse. This is one of the most exciting and well-written memoirs of an officer who served in the Civil War and on the frontier. For the first time, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers, tablets, and smartphones. Book Description
Beloved by the soldiers of the Army of the Potomac, insubordinate to his commander in chief, a master at preparing for war but cautious about engaging, General George Brinton McClellan is one of the most controversial figures of the American Civil War. Criticized throughout the remainder of his life, he never publicly defended his actions as commander of the Union army. Here, however, his posthumously-published memoir provides his answers to the critics. Using a combination of military documents, his own field records, and letters to his beloved wife Nelly, McClellan does not attempt a full autobiography but instead focuses on his short time as general in chief of the army. McClellan's legacy as commander is still in contention by some historians. The value of this book is its view into the mind of George McClellan during the bitter early days of the Civil War. No study of this important figure is complete without this volume. The editor of this work, William Cowper Prime, was an American journalist, art historian, numismatist, and travel writer, and close friend of McClellan's. He was instrumental in getting Princeton University to establish a department of art history, to which he donated his extensive collection of ceramic art. This remarkable and important narrative is available for the first time as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones for the first time. Book Description
This paper presents an analysis of the 306th Bomb Group’s contributions during World War II. Rather than providing a simple recounting of the various dates and accomplishments, the paper analyzes some of the key indicators and statistics of the group’s performance. In particular, the paper focuses on comparing aircraft losses and bombing results of the 306th with the Eighth Air Force’s. The analysis also examined other areas, such as: mission aborts, enemy aircraft claimed destroyed, weather conditions over target, bombing methods used, presence of fighter escorts, and strength of enemy air defenses (enemy fighter aircraft and flak). The purpose of the analysis was to gain a better understanding of the group’s overall performance within the bigger scope of the Eighth Air Force’s war effort. The analysis was conducted in three steps. First, the archives of the Air Force Historical Research Agency (AFHRA) were searched for statistics on the 306th. Next, similar statistics were collected for the Eighth Air Force. Finally, the data for the two units was analyzed and compared, to aid in determining conclusions. To facilitate the last step of the research, the air war was divided into four periods. The goals and objectives for each period were used as criteria to grade the unit’s effectiveness. In general, the study concluded that the 306th Bomb Group was a “typical” B-17 bomber group in World War II. When comparing the various statistics and graphs provide in this paper, we see that in most cases there was little difference in the data for the 306th and the Eighth Air Force. However, the statistics do not tell the whole story. As one of the cadre groups of the Eighth Air Force, many of the improvements and lessons learned during the early period of the war were at the expense of the 306th. These early lessons and experiments were important and led to the improvements that saved many lives and brought an end to the war.
