Book Description
The experimental measurements of the decay heat from the products of the thermal fission of U-235 have been compared with the OSU-proposed decay heat standard. These experiments are intended to verify the decay heat calculational methods and nuclear data files. The comparisons have included the previous experiments reviewed by Perry in 1973, and have extended the review to the current set of experiments. In addition, the calorimetric experiment of Lott, not included in Perry's evaluation, has been compared with the proposed standard. Except for the calorimetric experiment of Lott, none of the previous experiments were sufficient to judge the standard because of the large uncertainties they exhibited. The current experiments, however, have demonstrated much lower uncertainties and appear to constitute a reliable basis for the verification of the standard. Although some inconsistencies exist in the preliminary data of the ongoing experiments, the problems should be resolved before the final results are published. From the preliminary data of the ongoing experiments and from the final data of Lott, it is seen that there is substantive disagreement between calculation and experiment for short times after fission. This is probably due to the uncertainties in the nuclear data files for those fission products with short half-lives, which make a significant contribution to the decay heat at short cooling times.

Book Description
Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 22 (thesis year 1977) a total of 10,658 theses titles from 28 Canadian and 227 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 22 reports theses submitted in 1977, on occasion, certain universities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book Description
There are two primary methods of determining the decay heat generated after the shutdown of a nuclear reactor. One of these methods is integral experimental measurement of decay heat from the products of thermal-neutron fission of 235 U. The other method is a summation calculation (computer codes) based on nuclear data files. Confidence bounds for the best estimate of the decay heat can be calculated from a comparative analysis of experimental measurements and summation results. In the analysis, smoothing procedures were used to minimize the random variation in the data. Currently, the specification of decay heat relies on the American Nuclear Society (ANS) standard [1] which has very large uncertainties. The goal of this report is to provide accurate decay heat specifications which are composite predictions from the most recent integral experiments.
