Alo'en.[the first edition of the first volume of this Coi lection was printed, in four numbers, in 1812. A variety of circumstances, not of sufficient import ance to be mentioned in this notice, has retarded the completion of this series, which is to consist of five volumes, any former intimation to the contra ry notwithstanding. It is now thought adviseable not to continue a division of the work into num bers, as the captions of those numbers would, in the aggregate, eicclude several pages of matter. Should this series meet with a favourable reception, it is probable that, a few years hence, D80 tolerate, a second may make its appearance, with 'a greater proportion oi' biographical andhistorical details, in reference to characters and events in the south em and western parts of the United States, than is to be found in the first pentade. It having been occasionally suggested, in the first volume of this Collection, that its author was preparing a History of the state of N ew-j ersey, it is deemed proper here to add, that he has abandon ed that work for want of encouragement.
