The Love Affairs of Nathaniel P.
Author: Adelle Waldman
Publisher: Henry Holt and Company
ISBN: 0805097465
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 256
Book Description
Dive into the Intricate World of Love and Self-Discovery Writer Nate Piven's star is rising. After several lean and striving years, he has his pick of both magazine assignments and women: Juliet, the hotshot business reporter; Elisa, his gorgeous ex-girlfriend, now friend; and Hannah, "almost universally regarded as nice and smart, or smart and nice," who holds her own in conversation with his friends. When one relationship grows more serious, Nate is forced to consider what it is he really wants. Nathaniel is a man who believes himself immune to superficial judgment. Yet, his tumultuous relationships and constant struggle with status anxiety tell another story. As his romantic entanglements intensify, we witness his often infuriating failings: an enduring attraction to women, paired with a knack of letting them down. This coming of age tale takes a hard look at Nathaniel as he grapples with what he truly wants. Brought to life by the masterful storytelling of Adelle Waldman, this stunning debut novel promises an immersive experience into the heart of one man's relentless search for happiness. Presented with a combination of profound wit and heart-tugging emotion, The Love Affairs of Nathaniel P. is an absorbing tale of one young man's search for happiness—and an inside look at how he really thinks about women, sex and love.

Paying Attention to Foreign Affairs
Author: Thomas Knecht
Publisher: Penn State Press
ISBN: 0271037547
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 280
Book Description
Do American presidents consider public opinion when making foreign policy decisions? In a democracy, it is generally assumed that citizen preferences inform public policy. For a variety of reasons, however, foreign policy has always posed a difficult challenge for democratic governance. In Paying Attention to Foreign Affairs, Thomas Knecht offers new insights into the relationship between public opinion and U.S. foreign policy. He does so by shifting our focus away from the opinions that Americans hold and toward the issues that grab the public&’s attention. Policy making under the glare of public scrutiny differs from policy making when no one is looking. As public interest in foreign policy increases, the political stakes also rise. A highly attentive public can then force presidents to choose foreign policies that are less politically risky but usually less effective. By tracking the ebb and flow of public attention to foreign policy, this book offers a method of predicting when presidents are likely to lead, follow, or simply ignore the American public.

Tides in the Affairs of Men
Author: Cheryl Fury
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 0313074240
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 312
Book Description
The age of maritime expansion and the Anglo-Spanish War have been analyzed by generations of historians, but nearly all studies have emphasized events and participants at the top. This book examines the lives and experiences of the men of the Elizabethan maritime community during a particularly volatile period of maritime history. The seafaring community had to contend with simultaneous pressures from many different directions. Shipowners and merchants, motivated by profit, hired seamen to sail voyages of ever-increasing distances, which taxed the health and capabilities of 16th-century crews and vessels. International tensions in the last two decades of Elizabeth's reign magnified the risks to all seamen, whether in civilian employment or on warships. The advent of open warfare with Spain in 1585 resulted in a privateering war against the Spanish Empire, seen by some seamen as one of the few boons of the conflict. The other major development was the introduction of impressment, a deeply resented aspect of any naval war and one that brought great hardship to seamen and their families. The relationship between the Crown and its seafarers was a pull-haul between a state beset by financial problems of fighting a protracted war on several fronts and employees forced to work in dangerous conditions for substandard wages. The stresses of the war years tell us much about the dynamic of the maritime community, their expectations, and their coping strategies.
