36 Propositions for a Home
Author: Périphériques Architects
Publisher: Birkhäuser
ISBN: 9783764367398
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 350
Book Description
In 1998 Périphériques edited the book "36 propositions for a home". The projects resulted from an international competition to design lowpriced single-family houses. The publication was a great success and has been out of print for some time. In the meantime, some of the competition entries have been built and in this new book, the realization of these and similar houses which were designed in the same spirit, has been documented. Low in cost and commissioned by ordinary people, these buildings are nevertheless striking examples of contemporary residential forms, where creative use is made of prefabricated materials, buildings and surroundings are integrated in a highly individual way, and the feeling of spaciousness is emphasized in the designs. Examples from Abalos y Herreros, Atelier Bow-wow, Gallart, Lacaton-Vassal, Lacoste-Stevenson, Marin-Trottin, MVRDV, 2M2N, Paillard-Jumeau, Ricciotti, Tezuka-Tezuka are included and text contributions analyse the basic principles of lowcost building.

Racial Propositions
Author: Daniel Martinez HoSang
Publisher: Univ of California Press
ISBN: 0520947711
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 388
Book Description
This book looks beyond the headlines to uncover the controversial history of California's ballot measures over the past fifty years. As the rest of the U.S. watched, California voters banned public services for undocumented immigrants, repealed public affirmative action programs, and outlawed bilingual education, among other measures. Why did a state with a liberal political culture, an increasingly diverse populace, and a well-organized civil rights leadership roll back civil rights and anti-discrimination gains? Daniel Martinez HoSang finds that, contrary to popular perception, this phenomenon does not represent a new wave of "color-blind" policies, nor is a triumph of racial conservatism. Instead, in a book that goes beyond the conservative-liberal divide, HoSang uncovers surprising connections between the right and left that reveal how racial inequality has endured. Arguing that each of these measures was a proposition about the meaning of race and racism, his deft, convincing analysis ultimately recasts our understanding of the production of racial identity, inequality, and power in the postwar era.
