In the context of greenhouse gas emissions mitigation, CO2 capture and storage is regarded as a promising alternative for fossil fuel fed power plants. In order to design and evaluate the competitiveness of such complex integrated energy conversion systems, a systematic comparison including thermodynamic, economic and environmental considerations is necessary. From a process engineering perspective, it is important to evaluate the impact of CO2 capture not only on the efficiency but also on the costs and on the environmental impacts, and to assess the trade-offs. This paper presents the development of a systematic thermo-environomic optimisation strategy for the consistent modelling, comparison and optimisation of fuel decarbonisation options. In particular, it is highlighted how the economic scenario influences the competitiveness and hence the optimal process design.

Virtual commissioning of chemical plants often involves a dynamic simulator and an optimization method. This paper demonstrates the integration of APROS, a dynamic process simulator and IND-NIMBUS, an interactive multiobjective optimization software. We implement a multiobjective concentration control problem in APROS involving conflicting objectives and employ a decision maker to interact with IND-NIMBUS and express his preference information to finally obtain his most preferred solution. The results of this study show that APROS and IND-NIMBUS can be integrated and an interactive multiobjective optimization method can help the decision maker in exploring trade-offs among conflicting objectives and available solutions, and finally choose one solution as his preferred one.

Hydrogen is considered to be one clean energy carrier for the future. The main advantage of using hydrogen as energy carrier represents the negligible greenhouse gas emissions. One of the most encouraging hydrogen production methods is based on bioethanol. This paper is devoted to the conceptual design of hydrogen production process using bioethanol reforming at an industrial scale (100000 Nm3/h hydrogen equivalent to 300 MW thermal). The syngas will be then converted into hydrogen by water gas shift reaction. Two distinct designs were investigated, one without carbon capture and one with carbon capture. In the design with carbon capture and storage (CCS), the shifted syngas is treated for removing CO2 by gas-liquid absorption process. Considering that bioethanol has a low or negligible fossil carbon footprint, the case with CCS has a negative CO2 emissions contributing to decreasing atmospheric CO2. The conceptual designs of bioethanol reforming were modeled and simulated to produce mass and energy balances for quantification of key plant performance indicators (e.g. bioethanol consumption, plant energy efficiency, ancillary energy consumption, specific CO2 emissions etc.). A particular accent is put on assessment of reforming unit operation conditions, process integration issues of reforming unit and syngas conditioning line with carbon capture unit, modeling and simulation of whole plant, thermal and power integration of various plant sub-systems by pinch analysis. Benchmark cases based on fossil fuels partial oxidation were also presented.

Chromatographic operations are identified as critical steps in a monoclonal antibody (mAb) purification process and can represent a significant proportion of the purification material costs. The optimisation of chromatography equipment sizing strategies is therefore crucial to improve the cost-effectiveness of mAb manufacture. In this work, a mixed-integer linear programming model (MILP) was developed to determine the optimal chromatography column sizing decisions, so as to minimise the cost of goods per gram (COG/g) of the whole mAb manufacturing process. Modelling challenges related with non-linearities involving the multiplication of decision variables were addressed by the use of linearisation techniques allowing the resulting model to determine global process performance metrics (e.g. chromatography processing time, COG/g). The application of the MILP model to an industrially-relevant case study combined with the use of visualisation methods proved to be a valuable tool to explore the characteristics of the optimal sizing strategies across different scenarios and to facilitate decision-making.

Wastewater treatment is an important process of considerable significance for environmental, economic and social aspects of sustainability. Although wastewater treatment helps reduce environmental pollution, thus limiting negative societal effects, it may have negative impacts on sustainability; for instance, waste discharged during the treatment. Determination of the impact of a particular process generally involves application of a set of sustainability indicators that evaluate environmental, economic and societal issues. However, indicators are usually presented without a description that is sufficiently detailed to enable repetition of the calculations. For example, sustainability indicators for evaluation of wastewater treatment processes are commonly presented in tabular form. The objective of this work is to assess a set of sustainability indicators for evaluation of environmental, economic and societal aspects of wastewater treatment processes. Some of the presented indicators have not previously been used in the context of wastewater treatment. Usually environmental sustainability is assessed through calculation of greenhouse gas release, waste discharge and energy use. Economic sustainability is determined by estimating capital and wastewater operating costs. Social sustainability is evaluated based on working conditions, e. g., worker stress, work satisfaction and attitudes to achieving sustainability. The applicability of the approach and indicators chosen is evaluated with case studies of wastewater treatment for which the presented sustainability indicators are calculated. The results show that environmental and economic indicators can easily be determined quantitatively, but social indicators require a qualitative approach. The usability of the indicators and their limitations are critically analyzed.

Developing a methodology for short-term crude oil unloading, tank inventory management, and CDU charging schedule using mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model has been a serious challenge. This paper is an improvement to the previous work reported by Lee et al. (1996) and aims at making the MILP model reflects real industrial applications. The model in the previous work was re-formulated based on established operating rules, material balance constraints, resources allocation constraints, sequence constraints, product quality and crude oil mix demand constraints. The problem statement was modified to represent certain details in the improved model. A case from examples presented in the Lee et al. (1996) paper was used to test the improved model. Two scenarios (A and B) were created from the case to show the benefits of the improved model in deciding the best schedule to use.

In mineral processing, the recovery and/or concentration of the value components cannot occur in one operational stage, necessitating the use of separation circuits. The component to be separated is usually distributed at different concentrations and different particle sizes, resulting in different levels of recovery in terms of the particle size and concentration. Typically, more than one value component must be selectively removed by exploiting the differences in the components' floatability at different values of the pH, pulp potential and particle size. Several methods for the design of these circuits are available in the literature, but comparatively few articles present circuit analysis tools. In this work, global sensitivity analysis was used to analyze and design separation circuits. The effect of each stage on the general circuit was studied and the relationships between the recovery at each stage and the global recovery of the circuit were identified. The effects of uncertainties in the kinetic constants, the residence time and the number of cells were also analyzed. The Sobol' and Morris methods were applied using the software SimLab 2.2. The advantages and disadvantages of each method are discussed and the two methods are compared with local methods (which were previously published by the authors); application of the two methods to the design of mineral separation processes is also discussed. These considerations are illustrated by a case study.

Multiscale process modeling is very appealing methodology for process optimization since it highlights certain issues that remain unexplored with conventional methodologies and debottlenecks certain potentialities that remain unexploited in chemical plants. In this work, a kinetic model with 2400 reactions and 140 species is implemented in a proper reactor network to characterize the thermal furnace and the waste heat boiler of sulfur recovery units; the network with detailed kinetics is the kernel of a Claus process simulation that include all the unit operations and the catalytic train. By doing so, reliable estimation of acid gas conversion, elemental sulfur recovery, and steam generation is achieved with the possibility to carry out an integrated process-energy optimization at the total plant scale.
