The international conference on current trends in the theory and practice of informatics SOFSEM 2000 was held 25 November–2 December 2000 in the c- ference facilities of the Dev?et Skal (Nine Rocks) Hotel, Milovy, Czech-Moravian Highlands, the Czech Republic. It was already the 27th annual meeting in the series of SOFSEM conferences organized in either the Czech or the Slovak Rep- lic. Since its establishment in 1974, SOFSEM has gone through a long dev- opment in parallel with the entire ?eld of informatics. Currently SOFSEM is a wide-scope, multidisciplinary conference, with stress on the interplay between the theory and practice of informatics. The SOFSEM scienti?c program consists mainly of invited talks which determine the topics of the conference. Invited talks are complemented by short refereed talks contributed by SOFSEM parti- pants. The topics of invited talks are chosen so as to cover the span from theory to practice and to bring interesting research areas to the attention of conf- ence participants. For the year 2000, the following three streams were chosen for presentation by the SOFSEM Steering Committee: – Trends in Algorithmics – Information Technologies in Practice – Computational Perception The above streams were covered through 16 invited talks given by prominent researchers. There were 18 contributed talks also presented, chosen by the int- national Program Committee from among 36 submitted papers. The program also included a panel on lessons learned from the Y2K problem.

The workshop series on Text, Speech and Dialogue originated in 1998 with the ?rst TSD1998 held in Brno, Czech Republic. This year’s TSD2000, already the third in the series, returns to Brno and to its organizers from the Faculty of Informatics at the Masaryk University. As shown by the ever growing interest in TSD series, this annual workshop developed into the prime meeting of speech and language researchers from both sides of the former Iron Curtain, which provides a unique opportunity to get acquainted with the current activities in all aspects of language communication and to witness the amazing vitality of researchers from the former East Block countries. Investigations of the Syntax-Semantics-Pragmatics Interface presents on-going research in Role and Reference Grammar in a number of critical areas of linguistic theory: verb semantics and argument structure, the nature of syntactic categories and syntactic representation, prosody and syntax, information structure and syntax, and the syntax and semantics of complex sentences. There is ample evidence that language users, including second-language (L2) users, can predict upcoming information during listening and reading. Yet it is still unclear when, how, and why language users engage in prediction, and what the relation is between prediction and learning. This volume presents a collection of current research, insights, and directions regarding the role of prediction in L2 processing and learning. The contributions in this volume specifically address how different (L1-based) theoretical models of prediction apply to or may be expanded to account for L2 processing, report new insights on factors (linguistic, cognitive, social) that modulate L2 users’ engagement in prediction, and discuss the functions that prediction may or may not serve in L2 processing and learning. Tato publikace je sborníkem 21 příspěvků, přednesených na 9. ročníku konference „Teaching and Learning Corpora“, která se uskutečnila na Masarykově univerzitě v létě 2010. Statě byly vybrány na základě dvou anonymních posudků, poskytnutých vědeckou radou konané konference. Kniha se zabývá rozmanitými způsoby využití jazykových korpusů při výuce a při studiu cizího jazyka, a je rozdělena do čtyř oddílů. Oddíly 1 a 2 pohlížejí na korpus jako vstupní zdroj, zkoumají nejdříve obecně jak mohou korpusy obohatit výuku jazyka, poté na konkrétních případech ukazují, jak převést poznatky do praxe, a nakonec hodnotí jednotlivé využití korpusů studenty. Oddíly 3 a 4 tematizují korpus jako výstup, což představuje především srovnání s korpusy rodilých mluvčích a následnou identifikaci „chyb“ či problémových oblastí, ale také ukazují, co studenti mohou vědět a skutečně ví v různých úrovních pokročilosti, a pokouší se zodpovědět na otázku, co nám tyto informace říkají o samotném procesu učení.
