Theoretical Methods in Medium-Energy and Heavy-Ion Physics
Author: K. W. McVoy
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461328772
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 756
Book Description
A NATO Advanced Studies Institute was held June 12-23, 1978, at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin. It was a topical Institute in theoretical nuclear physics and had the some what novel feature of focussing not on a single topic but on two closely allied ones: pion-nucleus and heavy-ion physics. These two fields. both dedicated to the investigation of short-wave length properties of nuclei, have many techniques and concepts in cornmon, and essentially become one in the topic of relativistic heavy-ion physics. The purpose of including both in a single Institute was to encourage the practitioners in each of these fields to learn from those in the other; to judge from the liveli ness of the questioning which ensued, the purpose was well-served indeed. Because the Institute was viewed as one which served both educational and research ends, the lecturers took particular pains to develop their subjects in a careful, coherent sequence. The result is a compendium of advanced techniques and current results in these two rapidly-expanding fields of nuclear theory which should serve interested physicists as an ideal introduction to the fields. In addition to the support provided by the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO, substantial financial assistance was provided by the U. S. National Science Foundation and the Graduate School of the University of Wisconsin.

Theoretical Approaches of Heavy Ion Reaction Mechanisms
Author: M. Martinot
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 148325710X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 443
Book Description
Theoretical Approaches of Heavy Ion Reaction Mechanisms provides information pertinent to heavy ion reactions and nuclear fission at low energies. This book discusses the features of the time-dependent solution of the Kramer–Chandrasekhar equation. Organized into 27 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the deexcitation process of a highly excited nucleus by means of its decay into two fragments. This text then presents a microscopic description to extract the characteristics features of the collective dynamics of the fission process at low energy. Other chapters consider nuclear fission as a transport process over the fission barrier. This book discusses as well the microscopic foundations of the phenomenological collective models. The final chapter deals with the composition of the baryons and mesons in terms of gluons and quarks. This book is a valuable resource for nuclear and high energy physicists. Experimentalists, theoreticians, and research workers will also find this book useful.

Stochastic Processes and Random Matrices
Author: Grégory Schehr
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0192517864
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 432
Book Description
The field of stochastic processes and Random Matrix Theory (RMT) has been a rapidly evolving subject during the last fifteen years. The continuous development and discovery of new tools, connections and ideas have led to an avalanche of new results. These breakthroughs have been made possible thanks, to a large extent, to the recent development of various new techniques in RMT. Matrix models have been playing an important role in theoretical physics for a long time and they are currently also a very active domain of research in mathematics. An emblematic example of these recent advances concerns the theory of growth phenomena in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class where the joint efforts of physicists and mathematicians during the last twenty years have unveiled the beautiful connections between this fundamental problem of statistical mechanics and the theory of random matrices, namely the fluctuations of the largest eigenvalue of certain ensembles of random matrices. This text not only covers this topic in detail but also presents more recent developments that have emerged from these discoveries, for instance in the context of low dimensional heat transport (on the physics side) or integrable probability (on the mathematical side).
