If roots become too dry it may kill the eyes. Handle roots care fully, if the necks are broken or crowns injured it may ruin the tuber. Dahlias will grow in any good garden soil. An open, sunny location is best. They are usually planted from May 1 to June 10. The soil should be thoroughly pulverized to a considerable depth. About one half pint of bone meal and a pint of sheep manure or some well-rotted manure may be mixed with the soil for each dahlia. Book Description
Excerpt from Select List of Dahlias, Peonies, Gladioli and Hardy Plants for 1926 After the plants have been frozen in the Fall, dig carefully and store the roots in a dry, cool cellar for Winter. In the Spring, the roots should be divided, preferably to one eye, before planting. We send out divided field grown roots only. These are much more satisfactory than the weak, tender, green plants sometimes offered. If stored in a cool place, not too dry, until planted out every one will grow. They are stored under the best possible conditions which preserves them in a healthy, plump condition until planting time. All stunted plants are rogued from the field to insure healthy stock.
