Impressed with the idea that the progress of the Reformation in England rendered it safe for him to leave his concealment, he settled at Antwerp in 1534, and combined the work of an evangelist with that of a translator of the Bible. Mainly through the instrumentality of one Philips, the agent either of Henry or of English ecclesiastics, or possibly of both, he was arrested, imprisoned in the castle of Vilvoorden, tried, either for heresy or treason, or both, and convicted; was first strangled, and then burnt in the prison yard, Oct. 6, 1536. His last words were, "Lord, open the king of England's eyes."

Recent studies have increasingly downplayed, and in a few cases even wholly denied, the influence of Martin Luther's theology of Law and Gospel on early English evangelicals such as William Tyndale. The impact of a late medieval Augustinian renaissance, Erasmian Humanism, the Reformed tradition, and Lollardy have all but eclipsed the more central role once attributed to Luther. Whiting reexamines these claims with a thorough reevaluation of Luther's theology of Law and Gospel in its historical context spanning twenty-five years, something entirely lacking in all previous studies. Based on extensive research in the primary sources, with acute attention to the larger historical narrative and in dialogue with secondary scholarship, Whiting argues that scholars have often oversimplified Luther's theology of Law and Gospel and have thus wrongly diminished his very significant, even principal, influence upon first-generation evangelicals William Tyndale, John Frith, and Robert Barnes during the English Reformation of the 1520s and 30s.

While Tyndale's importance in the history of biblical translation is well understood, his theology has been much less studied. Ralph Werrell has become the leading authority on his theology, and in The Blood of Christ in the Theology of William Tyndale, he explores the background to and influences on one of Tyndale's central theories. Werrell shows that Tyndale's ideas were developed independently, based on a wide range of earlier theology, and - in particular - from Wycliffite thought. He explains the way in which Old Testament sacrifice featured in Tyndale's thought, explaining his many references to the Epistle to the Hebrews, linking as it does Christ's sacrificial blood with the sacrifices of the Old Testament. Tyndale believed that man died spiritually through Adam's disobedience, and that it was brought back to life by Christ's blood. In this volume, Werrell brings out the differences between the covenant theology of Tyndale and both Luther's theology of the cross and Calvin's forensic justification, showing clearly the originality of Tyndale's beliefs.
