Loudness
Author: Mary Florentine
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1441967125
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 299
Book Description
Loudness is the primary psychological correlate of intensity. When the intensity of a sound increases, loudness increases. However, there exists no simple one-to-one correspondence between loudness and intensity; loudness can be changed by modifying the frequency or the duration of the sound, or by adding background sounds. Loudness also changes with the listener’s cognitive state. Loudness provides a basic reference for graduate students, consultants, clinicians, and researchers with a focus on recent discoveries. The book begins with an overview of the conceptual thinking related to the study of loudness, addresses issues related to its measurement, and later discusses the physiological effects of loud sounds, reaction times and electrophysiological measures that correlate with loudness. Loudness in the laboratory, loudness of steady-state sounds and the loudness of time-varying sounds are also covered, as are hearing loss and models.

Smart Structures: From Concepts To Applications
Author: Amr M Baz
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 1800614144
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 616
Book Description
This book presents a comprehensive coverage of smart structures, from the basic concepts to a wide spectrum of critical applications, including piezoelectric-based sensors, actuators, and self-sensing actuators. Throughout the book, attempts have been made to develop electrical analogies of the structural/piezoelectric interactions. The book is organized into seven chapters. The first three chapters cover the basic concepts of structural dynamics, control, piezoelectric actuators, and piezoelectric sensors. The following four chapters cover a wide range of important applications in active vibration control, passive shunted piezoelectric networks, comprehensive piezoelectric energy harvesting technology, and piezoelectric-based periodic and metamaterial structures. Every chapter concludes with several problems.

Noise and Vibration Mitigation for Rail Transportation Systems
Author: Tatsuo Maeda
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 4431539271
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 575
Book Description
This volume contains the contributions to the 10th International Workshop on Railway Noise, held October 18–22, 2010, in Nagahama, Japan, organized by the Railway Technical Research Institute (RTRI), Japan. With 11 sessions and 3 poster sessions, the workshop featured presentations by international leaders in the field of railway noise and vibration. All subjects relating to 1. prospects, legal regulation, and perception; 2. wheel and rail noise; 3. structure-borne noise and squeal noise; 4. ground-borne vibration; 5. aerodynamic noise and micro-pressure waves from tunnel portals; 6. interior noise and sound barriers; and 7. prediction, measurements, and monitoring are addressed here. This book is a useful “state-of-the-art” reference for scientists and engineers involved in solving environmental problems of railways.

Dynamic Systems
Author: Bingen Yang

ISBN: 9781316841051
Category : TECHNOLOGY & ENGINEERING
Languages : en

Book Description
"A dynamic system is a combination of components or subsystems, which, with temporal characteristics, interact with each other to perform a specified objective. There exists such a variety of dynamic systems in applications, as machines, devices, appliances, equipment, structures, and industrial processes. Mathematically, a dynamic system is characterized by time-dependent functions or variables, which are governed by a set of differential equations. Physically, the components of a dynamic system may fall in different fields of science and engineering, such as mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, vibrations, elasticity, electronics, acoustics, optics, and controls. As an example, an electric motor is a dynamic system consisting of mechanical components (like rotating shaft, bearing and housing), electromagnetic components (such as magnets, coils and electrical interconnects), and components for controlling the motor speed (including speed sensor, control logic board and driver). These components interact with each other to achieve a desired motor speed. The rotation speed and circuit currents are time-dependent variables of the motor that are governed by differential equations in the fields of dynamics and electromagnetism"--
