Excerpt from Tenth Technical Alfalfa Conference Proceedings: Held at Reno, Nevada, July 11, 1968 In summary, insects do cause quite measurable losses in feed quality of alfalfa. These losses can best be minimized by the selection for and inclusion of resistance toward those insects in alfalfa. Chemical control is not generally practiced in alfalfa forage crops because of many factors, including cost, residue hazards, and lack of understanding of actual losses due to insects. I have suggested some methods I believe will improve selection for resistance to potato leafhopper, which will result in more rapid progress in obtaining the resistance than has been experienced to date. Perhaps the actual heritability is much higher than previously thought, when the various factors affecting resistance are treated separately. Resistance to the pea aphid and spotted alfalfa aphid is quite effective and relatively easy to obtain. Resistance to the Lygus bug complex has been sought and may be aided by aphid and mealybug reduction through resistance to those insects. Spittle bug losses may also be lessened through selec tion for resistance both toward it and toward the potato leafhopper even though genetic relationship has not been shown for resistance in alfalfa toward those two insects.
