Book Description
For the past 25 years the CADE conference has been the major forum for the presentation of new results in automated deduction. This volume contains the papers and system descriptions selected for the 17th International Conference on Automated Deduction, CADE-17, held June 17-20, 2000,at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (USA). Fifty-three research papers and twenty system descriptions were submitted by researchers from ?fteen countries. Each submission was reviewed by at least three reviewers. Twenty-four research papers and ?fteen system descriptions were accepted. The accepted papers cover a variety of topics related to t- orem proving and its applications such as proof carrying code, cryptographic protocol veri?cation, model checking, cooperating decision procedures, program veri?cation, and resolution theorem proving. The program also included three invited lectures: “High-level veri?cation using theorem proving and formalized mathematics” by John Harrison, “Sc- able Knowledge Representation and Reasoning Systems” by Henry Kautz, and “Connecting Bits with Floating-Point Numbers: Model Checking and Theorem Proving in Practice” by Carl Seger. Abstracts or full papers of these talks are included in this volume. In addition to the accepted papers, system descriptions, andinvited talks, this volumecontains one page summaries of four tutorials and ?ve workshops held in conjunction with CADE-17.

Book Description
Handbook of the History of Logic brings to the development of logic the best in modern techniques of historical and interpretative scholarship. Computational logic was born in the twentieth century and evolved in close symbiosis with the advent of the first electronic computers and the growing importance of computer science, informatics and artificial intelligence. With more than ten thousand people working in research and development of logic and logic-related methods, with several dozen international conferences and several times as many workshops addressing the growing richness and diversity of the field, and with the foundational role and importance these methods now assume in mathematics, computer science, artificial intelligence, cognitive science, linguistics, law and many engineering fields where logic-related techniques are used inter alia to state and settle correctness issues, the field has diversified in ways that even the pure logicians working in the early decades of the twentieth century could have hardly anticipated. Logical calculi, which capture an important aspect of human thought, are now amenable to investigation with mathematical rigour and computational support and fertilized the early dreams of mechanised reasoning: "Calculemus. The Dartmouth Conference in 1956 – generally considered as the birthplace of artificial intelligence – raised explicitly the hopes for the new possibilities that the advent of electronic computing machinery offered: logical statements could now be executed on a machine with all the far-reaching consequences that ultimately led to logic programming, deduction systems for mathematics and engineering, logical design and verification of computer software and hardware, deductive databases and software synthesis as well as logical techniques for analysis in the field of mechanical engineering. This volume covers some of the main subareas of computational logic and its applications. - Chapters by leading authorities in the field - Provides a forum where philosophers and scientists interact - Comprehensive reference source on the history of logic

Book Description
`Intellectics' seeks to understand the functions, structure and operation of the human intellect and to test artificial systems to see the extent to which they can substitute or complement such functions. The word itself was introduced in the early 1980s by Wolfgang Bibel to describe the united fields of artificial intelligence and cognitive science. The book collects papers by distinguished researchers, colleagues and former students of Bibel's, all of whom have worked together with him, and who present their work to him here to mark his 60th birthday. The papers discuss significant issues in intellectics and computational logic, ranging across automated deduction, logic programming, the logic-based approach to intellectics, cognitive robotics, knowledge representation and reasoning. Each paper contains new, previously unpublished, reviewed results. The collection is a state of the art account of the current capabilities and limitations of a computational-logic-based approach to intellectics. Readership: Researchers who are convinced that the intelligent behaviour of machines should be based on a rigid formal treatment of knowledge representation and reasoning.

Book Description
By presenting state-of-the-art results in logical reasoning and formal methods in the context of artificial intelligence and AI applications, this book commemorates the 60th birthday of Jörg H. Siekmann. The 30 revised reviewed papers are written by former and current students and colleagues of Jörg Siekmann; also included is an appraisal of the scientific career of Jörg Siekmann entitled "A Portrait of a Scientist: Logics, AI, and Politics." The papers are organized in four parts on logic and deduction, applications of logic, formal methods and security, and agents and planning.

Book Description
Logic programming synthesis and transformation are methods of deriving logic programs from their specifications and, where necessary, producing alternative but equivalent forms of a given program. The techniques involved in synthesis and transformation are extremely important as they allow the systematic construction of correct and efficient programs and have the potential to enhance current methods of software production. Transformation strategies are also being widely used in the field of logic program development. LOPSTR 91 was the first workshop to deal exclusively with both logic program synthesis and transformation and, as such, filled an obvious gap in the existing range of logic programming workshops. In attempting to cover the subject as comprehensively as possible, the workshop brought together researchers with an interest in all aspects of logic (including Horn Clause and first order logic) and all approaches to program synthesis and transformation. Logic Program Synthesis and Transformation provides a complete record of the workshop, with all the papers reproduced either in full or as extended abstracts. They cover a wide range of aspects, both practical and theoretical, including the use of mode input-output in program transformation, program specification and synthesis in constructive formal systems and a case study in formal program development in modular Prolog. This volume provides a comprehensive overview of current research and will be invaluable to researchers and postgraduate students who wish to enhance their understanding of logic programming techniques.

Book Description
Symbolic rewriting techniques are methods for deriving consequences from systems of equations, and are of great use when investigating the structure of the solutions. Such techniques appear in many important areas of research within computer algebra: • the Knuth-Bendix completion for groups, monoids and general term-rewriting systems, • the Buchberger algorithm for Gröbner bases, • the Ritt-Wu characteristic set method for ordinary differential equations, and • the Riquier-Janet method for partial differential equations. This volume contains invited and contributed papers to the Symbolic Rewriting Techniques workshop, which was held at the Centro Stefano Franscini in Ascona, Switzerland, from April 30 to May 4, 1995. That workshop brought together 40 researchers from various areas of rewriting techniques, the main goal being the investigation of common threads and methods. Following the workshops, each contribution was formally refereed and 14 papers were selected for publication.

Book Description
This book is unique in that it gives asymptotic bounds on the sizes of the search spaces generated by many common theorem proving strategies. Thus it permits one to gain a theoretical unterstanding of the efficiencies of many different theorem proving methods. This is a fundamental new tool in the comparative study of theorem proving strategies.
