Book Description
That he was a medieval king who, with a progressive bent of mind, dared to look ahead to find that common ground for all his people to stand together. That he was a medieval king who is today tempting us to look back into the past to see our future through his eyes. Ever since the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance government came to power in 2014 with Narendra Modi as the prime minister, an organised campaign began to vilify Emperor Akbar and the Mughals. While there were always voices that tried to project the Mughals as just another 'Islamic empire', ignoring the civilisational impact they had on India, even for them Akbar was a shining light in an otherwise era of darkness. Those talking in terms of easy binaries always found a 'good Muslim' in Akbar and a 'bad Muslim' in Aurangzeb. Academics and other liberals who could have countered this incorrect portrayal did not do it, dismissing such claims as mere screeches by the fringe that do not deserve any attention. But with the Hindu Right assuming political power, the fringe today has become the mainstream. And Akbar is no longer the 'good Muslim'. Why is there such hatred for Akbar, once the most loved king in India? What was the journey like, from being great to not-so-great? And how is this India different from Akbar's Hindustan? Has he become irrelevant in an India where growing Hindu nationalism threatens to alter the nature of the Indian state from a secular republic to a theocracy? Or is Akbar even more relevant today given the backdrop of hate that we all find ourselves in? Allahu Akbar seeks to find answers to these questions while providing a profile sketch of the emperor, his empire and his times.

Book Description
The book '69 Verses' is a collection of songs and poems, a tiny slice, fished out from the vast sea of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore's creation. These songs and poems are translated in English rhyming poetry form the original Bengali compositions. Of these 69 verses, most of them are from Gitanjali - the book that overwhelmed Yeats when he first read it, and which won Tagore the Nobel Prize in 1913 and earned a place for the modern Indian literature in the map of world literature. The entire gamut of human emotions: hopes, aspirations, fear and frustration, the joy, the pangs all find authentic expressions in the vast oeuvre of Tagore's works. The present collection is mainly intended to provide a sample of his lyrical songs tinged with mysticism. The roots of these poems hark back right to the very earliest poetic achievements of humankind ---- the ancient Vedas. They also echo the strains of the medieval mystic saints of India and the Sufis, of the wandering minstrels that have not yet been completely destroyed from the rural India by the invasive modernity. These poems thus carry the resonances of the spiritual heart of India's long history. Music is an essential quality of Tagore's mystic poems. The translator has attempted with admirable success to communicate the spirit and rhythm of the Bengali originals. This has not been attempted so far by more than one or two translators because most of the time the flavor of the original work gets subdued, subtlety of rhythm gets reduced and the delicacy of color gets lost in translation. However, here the translator has tried to retain these properties of Tagore's creations to a considerable extent.

Book Description
This compact introduction to Islam describes the essential aspects of Islam as a living religion and social force. The book is organized around seven topics: the life of Muhammad; Islamic political development and territorial expansion; the important groupings of Islamic believers (Sunni, Shi'ite, and Sufi); the Qur'an (the Holy Book of Islam); Sunnah, Hadith (the record of the Prophet's actions and sayings), and Shari'ah (the compilation of Islamic law); the five Articles of Faith and the so-called Five Pillars of Islam that govern faith and action; and other binding religious observances and festivals. The presentation of these seven aspects of Islam strikes a balance between fact, tradition, current interpretation, and commentary. S. A. Nigosian underscores two fundamental points: that to understand Islam properly, it is necessary to see it as a major faith tradition, with Muhammad as the last of a series of messengers sent by God; and that to grasp the spirit of Islam, one must recognize its emphasis on an uncompromising monotheism, with strict adherence to certain social, political, and religious practices, as taught by the Prophet and elaborated by tradition.

Book Description
Ibn Taymiyya (1263–1328) of Damascus was one of the most prominent and controversial religious scholars of medieval Islam. He called for jihad against the Mongol invaders of Syria, appealed to the foundational sources of Islam for reform, and battled against religious innovation. Today, he inspires such diverse movements as Global Salafism, Islamic revivalism and modernism, and violent jihadism. This volume synthesizes the latest research, discusses many little-known aspects of Ibn Taymiyya’s thought, and highlights the religious utilitarianism that pervades his activism, ethics, and theology.
